Crazy Mouse???

The comupter I use here at work sometimes gets a little click-happy too. I think first just try making sure the little ball is clean and that the rollers the ball helps move are also clean/clear of gunk. Sometimes a dirty little mouse will refuse to move.

If a good cleaning on the lil critter doesn't help, try checking the settings in the My Computer/Mouse section and see if there's a sensitivity setting. It may be too sensitive. boo-hoo lol.

Last but not least, if none of the above workes, consider feeding your mouse to your cat and getting a new one! =o)

Is this an optical mouse or a mechanical mouse? Also, what OS are you running and what is the surface like? I have problems once with an optical mouse on an artificial woodgrain surface.

 

Sounds like a mechanical mouse that has too much dust and fuzz in his gizzards. Take it apart and clean it with a tooth brush and tweezers. We cleaned ours weekly until Jim got tired of trying to put it back together and bought me an optical mouse. No ball.

 

Run AdAware and Spybot. It sounds like it could be interferance from adware.

Also, check what all is starting up with Windows. Click RUN, type in "msconfig", click the STARTUP tab, uncheck the box beside anything you absolutely do not have to have (I only have my anti-virus, firewal, mouse driver, and DSL load on startup).

Other than that...try a new mouse. If you do, go optical. I'll never go back to a ball.

Ya the optical ones are kinda neat...their little optical "eyes" go nutz when you turn them on their back....blink blink blink bliiiiiinnnnnnkkkkkk!!

Aren't those also the ones that are "tail-less"?

Make sure your Windows Updates (not SP2, though) are up to date as well...

My first thought is also adware or someone operating/logged-in remotely...

Are you running a Firewall like ZoneAlarm or SyGate Personal?

My Firewall is set up to block everything when the screen saver kicks in so when I am up and away from my system on DSL I lower my vulnerability somewhat...

Sidenote: One place I worked at my system did this and I finally got one of the IT guys to admit they thought it was one of the IT security guys playing around...

The only other place I've had 'Crazy Mouse Syndrome' is when I have plugged a Logitech Mouse into a system expecting a Microsoft Mouse...

Some mice have a button to select which Mouse Format to send to the computer if the switch starts going bad it may forget which type of information to send to the system...

WinXP is smart, mice-wise, but not after all the drivers are loaded.

 

Did you run a check to see if the mouse if operating okay? Do you have Dr. Watson installed? I have Windows XP and it pointed out my Logitech mouse conflict like Madman mentioned with his.

 

Also run a virus scan, and update it, if the above steps don't solve the problem.

Some worms allow basic system control to be taken over by the virus or by another system.
