Tibia: I've had a mom ask for advice!

    Nick's old preschool teacher (we've stayed in contact over the miles) emailed me today. Her 3 sons want her to buy Tibia online for them to play. I've not heard of this game and Al Menconi hasn't rated it.

    Does anyone know anything about this game, pro or con. The boys are 10- high school.

    I have not even heard of it but I have some friends that I can ask if no one else knows of it.
    I am not much of a gamer, I get bored with them way too fast :)

    There were almost 26,000 people playing the game when I looked at the front page you linked to. My concern is that it might be like that Everquest where people wouldn't stop playing...

    It is available for free according to the website (it doesn't look like the cutting edge, so they are going for a free gameplay model with premium extras that cost money) But it is a massively multiplayer online game. I used to play Asheron's Call for hours on end. I would be wary of having my kids get into something like it.

    If a game is fun to play it is easy to get hooked on. The biggest potential problem I see with Tibia is the underlying story. Every parent will need to decide for themselves whether they want their children playing a game that is based on gods. The website also includes the side view of a woman with no clothes, but I doubt you will see that in the game itself.

    Thanks T.Fish. This mom wrote Al Menconi's reviewers and decided NOT to buy this game for her boys because of 'the gods'.

    As one who has been beyond the "addicted" stage in role playing games (Dungeons&Dragons, Vampire, etc), I strongly suggest that you let the mother, parents, anyone know that they should stay away from it.

    I will be the first to admit that the games are a lot of fun. But they are a doorway...and if a person steps throguh that door...it is a long way back, if they ever come back.

    Playing D&D was a thrill, and since I was the DungeonMaster, I was in control. I researched my subject to make the games better and better. And my research took my to the occult. Those kids do not need that!
