Overclocking

Is it damaging to your computer? Yes and no. Yes, it accelerates the deterioration of your CPU, but your CPU will be hopelessly outdated before it will wear out. The main danger is caused by the excess heat generated by over-clocking.

Where did the threads go? After a thread has lain dormant for so long (I don't remember the length), it is deleted.

Oh, I almost forgot. The BIOS of maost pre-made computers are locked, thus preventing you from over-clocking the computer.

There are programs that allow you to over-clock from inside Windows, but I don't know if they will work with locked BIOS. If you want to try one of them, check here:

It is not the BIOS that locks, rather, the CPU that is clock locked. Within the BIOS one can incrementally increase the FSB (Front Side Bus - the speed at which the CPU and the RAM communicate) and likewise raise the CPU voltage to gain greater performance.

However, with a system running today at 3+ GHz, where is the real need... Damage may result to the CPU but likewise, damage may also occur in other components within the system. A higher PCI and/or AGP bus may result in damage to cards installed in the system and/or system components on the motherboard.

I highly recommend doing some very serious research into overclocking and understand all aspects of it before doing it yourself. The end result may very well be a new computer.
