    Acts 23:6b

Is Paul lying about why he is appearing before the council?

And, if so, was he justified in doing so?

What are your thoughts and opinions on this?

". . . But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question. . . ."
What makes you think he lied?

In other words, was that truly the reason why he had to appear before the council? Because he was a Pharisee?

After Paul was found out he was a born free Roman citizen.
Acts of the Apostles 22:30, ". . . On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them. . . ."

Paul was either following the Lord’s advice, or, it wasn’t Paul that was speaking:

16 Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.
    17 But beware of men: for they will deliver you up to councils, and in theirs synagogues they will scourge you;
18 yea and before governors and kings shall ye be brought for my sake, for a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.
19 But when they deliver you up, be not anxious how or what ye shall speak: for it shall be given you in that hour what ye shall speak.
20 For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father that speaketh in you. Mt 10

    Acts of the Apostles 23:6
Then when Paul noticed that part of them were Sadducees and the others Pharisees, he shouted out in the council, "Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. I am on trial concerning the hope of the resurrection of the dead!"

If the above claim, in red, is the "lie" supposedly found in Acts 23:6b, then no, because the claim is true.

Wasn't Paul appearing before the council because he was preaching Jesus?

It wasn't simply because they discovered he was a Pharisee, was it?

Wasn't that claim disingenuous, at the very least?

Can you preach the Gospel without mentioning resurrection? Resurrection of the dead in general, and the resurrection of Jesus in particular.

Paul was appearing before the council because he was preaching Jesus as the crucified, resurrected Messiah of the Jews.

He did not lie. He was being very wise to use their own theological disagreements over the hope of the resurrection to disrupt the trial.

    peace to you

Yes, that's my point (as previously stated).

He was appearing before the council, because he was preaching Jesus.

Paul was not lying at all, but rather tailoring his presentation to emphasize how illogical it was for a Pharisee like him to object to The Way. He was exactly right.

The core tenet of Christianity is that Jesus was raised from the dead never to die again.

In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul goes to great lengths to explain just how central. The resurrection of Christ is of first importance, along with the reason he died, was entombed, and appeared to witnesses. See vv. 1-8.

In v. 14 he says “And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith.”
