What does the Bible say about women & girls wearing pants?

    I don't know if this topic has ever been on the Baptist Board, but I am curious as to how Baptists will respond. According to Deuteronomy 22:5 "¶ The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are abomination unto the LORD thy God.", how would you respond?     It depends upon which society is being viewed. In Alaska, I doubt if any woman fails to wear pants very often. And in Scotland, many men wear kilts,and no one accuses them of cross-dressing. And here, the "cut" and design of mens'& womens' pants are quite different.

    Don't become bogged down in legalism, which isn't just unScriptural, but downright unlearned.

    Yes, this topic has been discussed long and often in other forums here, & I expect that a moderator will move this topic to another forum and most likely close it.

    In Deuteronomy 22:5, when Moses wrote and said "man shall not wear that which pertaineth to a woman", he was speaking of battle array. When you dig into the Hebrew and Chaldean, interpretations will show you that the what Moses was indeed saying was that women were not to go to war. It had nothing to do with women wearing blouses (short sleeve or long), it had nothing to do with pants; for at that time, everyone wore robes.

    Here's the NIV version of Deu.22:5... "A woman must not wear men's clothing, nor a man wear women's clothing, for the LORD your God detests anyone who does this."

    Plainly, God was not specific in what constituted strictly-male or strictly-female apparel.

    I agree with you robycop, this can get one bogged down in legalism--that's why I was curious as to how people on this board would respond. If this topic has been on this board before, it's okay if it is moved or gets closed. Just wasn't sure how to go about starting a poll--since I am very new to this board.

    When the Bible was inspired they had never heard of pants.

    Isn't it true according to scripture that women who wear skirts are wearing men's clothes?

    Deut 22:30, "A man shall not take his father's wife so that he will not uncover his father's skirt."

    No, the "father's skirt" in that passage is the skirt being worn by the father's wife.

    Linda, yes, this subject has been debated innumberable times here. But, in the long run, what that passage seems to refer to is that a man should not try to look like a woman nor a woman to look like a man. Since this is done primarily via clothes, that would be the first issue addressed.

    I have seen girls that look like guys. I have seen guys that look like girls. I have seen some where I can't tell what they are!

    So for myself, I just make sure there is no mistake no matter what I am wearing!

    For me, it is not only about clothes.

    In the Philippines, I see gays wearing earrings and bangles while clutching shoulder bag designed for women; they apply mascara and wear perfumes used by women.

    They speak with voice like of the women; their breasts operated on to imitate the real woman’s. Shaved their legs (and eyebrows), with very long hair, etc. Lastly, they claim heartily that they are women.

    It’s not only what the eyes can see, but in the heart, too. In and out, women not to wear and act that pertain to a man and man which are for women.

    sounds like San Francisco!

    Nevertheless, I agree with you. The Bible mentions simply clothes -- that might include accessories as well! And it certainly would indicate the condition of the heart, from which all the rest would result.

    Actually, the Hebrew "kanaph" translated in the KJV as "skirt" means "border, wing, corner(s)", etc. In KJV days, 'skirt'(noun) meant any free-hanging garment, undergarment, or parts of them that hung from the waist down. It was not gender-specific.

    The Bible does not mention pants being worn by women. It does, however, have a brief, but pointed, discussion of women wearing veils and men having long hair (I Corinithians chapter 11), the point of which is that, however women and men groom themselves, it should be gender specific as perceived by the customs of society.

    Here are two observations on this point:

    1. The Baptists who harp on women wearing dresses, which the Bible doesn't mention, seldom wear veils, which the Bible does mention.

    2. The point of wearing veils was to symbolize the submissive position of women under their husbands; yet the women who insist that dresses and skirts are the only acceptable feminine garments are quite often the bossiest wives around! LOL!

    3. I quite suppose that for women of generations past who started wearing pants to assert their equality with men, it was a sin; not because of the pants, but because of the feminism involved. But now pants are so commonly accepted in this society that it has become a moot point.

    Which reminds me of what a pastor friend of mine told me; another pastor told him his wife was sinning by wearing pants. He reponded by asking the critic if he would wear the pants his wife was wearing, to which the man replied "no." When asked, "why not", he said, "because they look like women's pants".

    That little incident speaks volumes to this lame and worn out subject.

    All I can say is a big AMEN to that Bro. Mark!! This is what I have been trying to get across to some who are so legalistic about the dress and long hair issue that they take their eyes off Christ and focus on outward appearances. My husband is in total agreement with you also--he gets so frustrated with those people that his hair is turning gray and also turning loose!! LOL

    Deborah went with Barak as a judge--not to fight. Read Judges 4. She went to rally the troops--so to speak.

    I once heard a pastor address this very topic. He explained it that in the days the Bible was written both men and women wore what we now consider robes. The difference was that the clothing worn by men had a lower neckline and it was shorter, enabling men a little more movement in doing their physical labors. The clothing worn by women, although quite similar, covered more of their bodies. Thus a woman who wore a man's clothing was showing more of her body and thus showing herself as a "loose woman," or a prostitute. A man who wore a woman's clothing was showing himself to be effiminate.
