Sun Computer

    OK all you puter' wizes..I proably have a chance to pick up a Sun UltraSparc 10 Workstation for free. Is it worth doing anything with? I know a little about it, but will hve to find some of the hardware(monitor & such) to go with it. I know I can't use windows on it but was wondering about Linux. Any help appreciated.

    Just found out I need to pick it up next wednesday.

    You might be able to put linux on it... I think there there were some distributions for it.

    Otherwise, a Sun should take the Solaris operating system.

    If you have to buy new hardware, make sure its compatible. Some of the old Sparc 10 machines I remember had different connectors for the monitor and other peripherals.

    Thanks, thats what I'm thinking too, about the hardware. I'm gonna download a manual for it & see what it shows. I've got another free puter' to pick up Sat. don't know what kind. But they give me something to tinker with without tearing mine up!!!

    If it is an UltraSparc 10 then it has a DB-15 connection for video, 10/100 ethernet, max memory of 1GB typically, uses IDE hard drives, never tried putting a over the counter drive in one however. Getting LINUX to run on it might be a bit of a chore, I loaded it on an Ultra 5 (the little brother to the Ultra 10) a while back and it gave me some difficulties. You may be able to get a freebie version of Solaris 10 from SUN's website, you could at one time.

    The odds of being able to go to BestBuy or wherever and purchase parts that will work is slim. SUN will typically only use SUN specific parts, if you get LINUX loaded you may be able to get other manufacturer parts to work. Also note that SUN parts (i.e. network cards) typically will not work in anything but SUN equipment.

    If the machine is a SPARC10 then it would make a great door stop, or boat anchor, and it does make a great heater when it is running. You might want to avoid a SPARC10.

    I have been working with SUN hardware and software about 7 years. Hope that helps.

    You can download solaris 10 for free if you don't need much paid support. www.sun.com/software

    There are versions of Linux that will work on an ultra 10 ( I have an ultra 5 and a Sun Blade 150 at home) but I would say unless you are a Linux guru, not a great idea. Driver support is not all that great. Most people who use Sun workstations want to run Solaris, Solaris 10 is as good as any linux distro I have used. Very good User interface in JDS 3, so use that instead of CDE or something old, it will be included. Its gnome based and pretty user friendly.

    the brain is right. If its an Ultra 10, cool, if its a Sparc 10, not so cool.

    I'm pretty sure he said it's a Sparc, but either way It'll give me something to learn on. I'm no guru but I've learned quite a bit about different types of systems over the last few months. I just like tinkering with'em over these winter months. But I do appreciate the help!!
