    Don’t know for sure.

Jewish genealogy records do not mention every person born, only those of importance for the narrative. Women are especially left out except in specific situations.

You often see the phrase “and he had other sons and daughters.”

So, yes, imo, they married their sisters and close relatives in the early days. The only other explanations would deny scripture that says Eve was the mother of all living.

And remember they lived for hundreds of years during that time, so the women could have had hundreds of children during their lives.

    peace to you

Curious phrase, “mother of all living”
    1. She is not the mother of anyone when Adam names her. The name implies that Eve would become the mother of all the living.
    2. Eve was not mother of Adam.
    3. The title is limited to a particular group of people. Eve is not mother of the animals, even though they are all living.
    4. Eve is not the mother of every one that has died.
    5. Eve does become the mother of all living people across the globe.
Even if there were people “outside the garden”, over time Eve would become a descendent of all living people eventually. Particularly if we use a definition of human that means a descendent of Adam and Eve.

Genesis 5:4-5, ". . . And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters: And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died. . . ."

Not any of Adam's daughters are named by name.

Is it fair to conclude that she would be the mother of all living through the seed of the woman?

IMO, the full effects of the Curse had not yet occurred, hence the very long lives. The (later) deleterious effects of inbreeding were not an issue, and it was long before God gave Moses the prohibitions about such practices.

    Another observation (or two):

Eve could only be the mother of everyone who had a mother. Eve was not the mother of Adam, nor was she her own mother. But then, neither Adam nor Eve had a mother.

I don't know if Adam ever said to Eve, "Who's your daddy!" :Wink

But would either have said to the other, "Yo mama!"? :Cautious

How many children did they have? Plenty. Enough to grieve God with their utter sinfulness.

Which brings up a related point (no pun intended):

After the flood, we are told there were only four couples to repopulate the earth.

And they still lived several hundred years. Abraham lived to be 175 (?) years old and had “other sins and daughters.”

Additionally, the genealogies didn’t mention every person in a particular line, only those the author thought important, so you really cannot date how long it’s been since the flood.

It was certainly long enough for those eight people to populate large cities.

    peace to you
