Help with cookies

No, not the chocolate chip or peanut butter kind, but I bet you already knew that, didn't you?

No, it's the computer cookie I'm having trouble with. Let me explain my problem...

I use IE5.0. Don't ask me why, what with all the other, better options out there, but I just do. Anyway, for some reason, after I sign-off and come back on line later, and visit a site, like the BB for example, I have to sign on again. My cookie is not saved.

Now here's the funny thing. I pull up my internet options "box," click on view files, and lo and behold, there is a cookie for the BB. It hasn't been deleted; it's sitting right where it's supposed to be.

I've checked the settings as best as I know, and as far as I can tell they are all set correctly. I just don't know why the cookies are not being accessed. It's quite frustrating.

Anyway, if anybody has any insights / comments / suggestions as to what I can do, they will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance.

Don't have that version on my machine, but in internet settings I have mine set as follows and have no problem, it is later version however: Privacy at medium; Security is set to Internet. On the general tab I have a temp internet files section and in settings I have it set to check for new versions each time I start explorer.

There should be an advanced tab that might have something you need to check, don't know.

It might help to isolate the problem if you would reboot after you get the message and see if you can enter the same site. Probably won't but ???

There is usually a "Reset to Default" that would set things to the way a new installation sets explorer up. This might undo something that you might have done somewhere unknowingly.

Tried resetting to default, and the problem persists.

IE is a pain in the..., well, you know where.

I think I'll go download firefox.

firefox has been doing lots better on my frustrations with browsers for sure.

Tim, you using Windows 98? 98SE? Windows ME? or XP?

If not sure, look at your desktop for the "My Computer" icon; right-click on it, and choose "Properties"; on the first tab, it'll tell you System, and identify the version of Windows.

Ah, silly me. Brother Bob wrote 'windows' and my failing eyes saw 'which IE version.' Time to go to the eye doctor I guess.

The correct answer would be... Windows XP

You might want to check the settings on your firewall. These can block cookies.

Oh well, I give up. I'll just enter passwords and the like each time I visit a site.

A number of programs like Adware and other security programs will wipe your passwords and usernames each time you close a program. Do you have anything like that?

You might also try going to control panel/add remove programs and get to your browser and click uninstall. It may have a repair option, try that.

If all else fails I'd uninstall the browser and reinstall it.

If that fails my old Navy days would suggest -- Run in circles scream and shout. It won't fix the problem but may make you feel better

I have a program called Spyware Killer, but I've had it installed on my computer for over a year. This problem with the cookies is only a couple of weeks old, so I doubt that's the problem.

Nah, I'm not gonna run in circles and scream and shout, although that is good advice . I've got firefox downloaded and installed, and it seems to be holding my cookies quite well, so I think I'll stick to that and say buh-bye to IE.

Yes, my brethern! Another poor lost soul has seen the light! Rejoice with this new-found one, rejoice!

Firefox is the cat's whiskers. Just wait until you start using extensions. They are add-ons you can download to make Firefox even better. I'm using like 24 of them in my Firefox.

The main ones you want would be NoScipt (prevents Java from running on web pages without permission), Adblock Plus as well as Adblock Filterset.G Updater (blocks many online ads from showing up), and Flashblock (prevents Flash based ads from running... you can choose to enable them on a per case basis).

Beyond those, some great ones are BBCodeXtra (adds right-click menus for BB code... like what is used here on the BB), Smiley Xtra (adds a whole bunch of smileys you can add in), Yahoo Mail Notifier (if you use Yahoo! mail), GMail Manager (if you use GMail), CookieCuller ( to allow you to protect the coolies you don't want erased... like your password to BB).

If you want to start using tabs (I can't stand using the web without my tabs!), get Tabbrowser Preferences. It gives you plenty of options and choices of how tabs can work, and Colorful Tabs makes your tabs prettier .

To get extensions, click Tools, Extensions, Get More Extensions, and search for these.
