Well, the LORD saw fit to give soldiers a full year to be away from any and all military duties to bond as a family.

Deuteronomy 24:5 = "When a man is newly married, he shall not go out with the army or be liable for any other public duty. He shall be free at home one year to be happy with his wife whom he has taken." ESV

And here is how James Dobson applied this principle to New Testament times for himself and his wife.

The rest of the question is if you do take that year off form "war" should you be paid for it?

NOT IN INFANTRY! Not till they can pull a 185 lb soldier/marine wounded off the field in a combat situation. Display that then maybe I’d reconsider.

No… war is a necessary service to our country plus it’s a learning process. We should not be paying money to anyone who doesn’t experience it 1st hand.

and I am not talking about actual war itself- but simply being in the military - even at a peacetime Stateside base.

I also look at it this way - lets say you own a small one-man operation - (ie C-store) and you decide to take a year off - who is going to run your store - - If you hire someone to run it - that will be an expense you did not have before.......

Lets take it up a few notches ----
So a female has a baby --- takes a year off - three months later - is PG again

................ So she ends up with 9 kids - gets 9 years off for maternity -
ends up as an E-6 with only 11 years of actual service - and retires from the Army - opps, I mean from motherhood......Probably never served in combat or a tour such as Korea.......

I'm fine with the military offering paternity leave for fathers. Women should not be in the military, so I am against maternity leave.

I'm a big proponent of generous family leave policies in general, whether that's military, other government jobs, or private sector.

As far as women in the military - there are places for them - but not as a parent -....

As far as leave time - negative - the military is for fighting - not for taking time off.

Cleary we disagree. I think that verse that Scarlet quoted in Deuteronomy says all we need to know though about how God values family time over active military service of soldiers.

As a Theonomist I'm all for applying most of the Old Testament moral and civil laws to today, including generous leave for soldiers.

If those laws are that important - than Jesus, Paul or other apostles would have made mention...
