The Scriptural Definition of Repentance - God’s Definition of True Repentance

Repentance is another subject that is misunderstood and misused by most people involved in religion. Their thought process concerning repentance goes something like this: “You have to get people lost before you can get them saved.” What do they mean by this kind of statement? Speaking from personal experience as one who formerly walked in this same darkness, they mean that you have to point out to a sinner how grievously they have broken God’s law and then under the load of guilt inflicted on the convicted sinner by such knowledge, they must show remorse over their failure, usually evidenced by tears. Once the supposed ‘repentant’ sinner has shown some outward evidence of a change of heart, exhibited by a change of ways, the religious world tragically pronounces that sinner converted or saved.

This isn’t true Godly repentance, but mere conscious conviction which all men are capable of experiencing and which can drastically alter a person’s way of life. Under this kind of conviction the drunk will quit drinking, the adulterer will quit their philandering, and the nonreligious will act deeply religious. The problem with this kind of ‘repentance’ is that sinners are deceived into thinking everything is alright, while in reality they are in worse shape than they were before this experience - “Woe (judgment) unto you, scribes and Pharisees (moral, sincere, religionists), hypocrites! For ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.” (Matthew 23:15)

What then is Biblical repentance? Augustus Toplady the writer of one of my favorite hymns, “Rock of Ages”, wrote the following statement concerning repentance: “When Christ entered into Jerusalem, the people spread their garments in the way. When He enters into our hearts, we pull off our own righteousness and not only lay it under Christ's feet, but trample upon it ourselves". Toplady was expressing the reality of true Biblical repentance which occurs in the heart of every sinner justified by Christ’s finished work at Calvary. In regeneration, manifest through the new birth, the justified sinner for the first time sees how holy God is, and how strict His justice is, and they are taught that ONLY the merit of the obedience and death of their Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, removed God’s wrath and gained God’s favor for them. This radical change of mind affected in every sinner God the Father justified at the cross is something only common to the elect of God, and, like faith, it is a gift - “When they heard these things, they held their peace, and glorified God, saying, then hath God also to the Gentiles granted repentance unto life.” (Acts of the Apostles 11:18) True repentance is evidenced by a sinner willingly turning their back on everything they thought saved them or recommended them to God, and resting SOLELY on Christ ALONE as their only ground, hope, or cause of eternal life. The Apostle Paul wrote: “For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.” (Philippians 3:3)

Mark 1:15, . . . repent ye, and believe the gospel.

Acts of the Apostles 20:21, . . . repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.

Hebrews 6:1, . . . the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God, . . .

    Repentance precedes faith.

And yet the gospel account of John does not use this term repentance, John 1:12, . . . But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: . . .

you need faith to repent, and by repenting you show your faith in the Lord and His Word.

"and that repentance for the forgiveness of sins should be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem" (Luke 24:47 best textual evidence)

"Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” 38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2)

"Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out" (Acts 2:19)

13 There were some present at that very time who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 And he answered them, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans, because they suffered in this way? 3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them: do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others who lived in Jerusalem? 5 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” (Luke)

REPENTANCE and FAITH are required BEFORE any sinner can be saved!

Some actually claim if you stop believing in something, that is works, but when you start believing in something else, that is not works. I kid you not. However when we abandon what we believed in before, and embrace the New Covenant, we repent from our prior faith and put our faith into the new covenant.

Romans 11:6, And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work.

Romans 4:5, But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

    @SavedByGrace,
What do you think repentance does in order to receive a gift.

repentance of sins is as clearly described by the Apostle Paul

For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death, 2 Corinthians 7:10

For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

The salvation is a gift. Romans 4:5, But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

    2 Corinthians 7:10 NASB
For the sorrow that is according to God produces a repentance without regret, to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death.

When we suffer grief or affliction or loss, we consider what we might do differently. If we suffer grief because we did not seek the righteousness of God, it is like receiving discipline from our earthly father, the result is intended to lead us toward more sucess.
However, if we suffer grief due to our pursuit of worldly treasure, our response might be to seek worldly treasure in a more successful way, but such a path leads to death, not salvation.
