American Missionary Kidnapped At Gunpoint In South Africa While Delivering Sermon

"Josh Sullivan, 45, was delivering a sermon at the Fellowship Baptist Church Motherwell in Gqeberha, South Africa, when he was abducted at gunpoint, according to CBS News. Sullivan and his family moved from Tennessee to South Africa in 2018, his personal website shares."

“It’s a real thing. You go to Africa and some of these countries you may get kidnapped and killed,” he said. Devlin referenced a meeting he had with a Catholic bishop in Nigeria, during which he said he was given a list of all recent Nigerian Catholic priests that have been kidnapped over the last 10 years. “Sadly, it’s six pages long.”

They Were No Fools: The Martyrdom of Jim Elliot and Four Other Missionaries

"On January 8, 1956, 28-year-old American missionary Jim Elliot was martyred, along with four missionary partners and friends. He was survived by his wife, Elisabeth, and their 10-month-old daughter Valerie."

(Mat 10:13 KJV) And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.
(Mat 10:14 KJV) And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.
(Mat 10:15 KJV) Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

Does this scripture apply?

Is Jim Elliot and other missionaries who choose to continue trying to evangelize people following their demonstrated resentment and are killed as a result, martyrs or fools?

I would say that these people are martyrs, not fools.

I don't believe the scripture applies.

Jim Elliot's widow went BACK to the same place her husband was murdered WITH her toddler child and she and others were able to bring Christ to those people. So many people were saved. She wrote many books that should be required reading for a lot of Christians.

She met the man who killed her husband and asked "why?". He said he was frightened of her husband, not understanding his kindness and being suspicious of it.

Jim's death was horrific and very sad, but it led the way for Christ to be brought to these people.

Jesus was sending out the apostles and if you read from Mat 10:7 on you will see that they could do miracles that we can not do.

We are also told to preach the gospel to the whole world. It does not say we will be welcome and in most cases we will not be but we are to labor on until He comes.

So were they fools, NO, they were just laboring on.
