How do you see your local church, or churches in your area?

Are they rock solid, or a leaky vessel?

What has changed in your lifetime?

What do you see as the cause of this decline?

Lack of biblical knowledge of the average pew sitter. And preachers that should have spent more time in study and less time talking. I can't call it preaching as that would require that they actually knew the word of God.

Have you had an opportunity to discuss your concerns with the elders? If so, what response did you receive?

Strong preaching of Doctrine has been abandoned or compromised in favor of less offensive, more pragmatic approaches.
Seeker sensitive entertainment, stories , and jokes, rather that scripture? A catchy song leader, or "worship" team? let's not sing the old hymns, replace it with a few chorus 's on repeat, 10 x...is it like that now?

I went to WV some years ago to visit an old Army buddy for a few days. He was a SB and we had already made plans to go to his Church before I left on Sunday afternoon.

When I walked in the Church that Sunday morning they were throwing footballs to each other all through the seated congregation. I asked Greg what this was all about, he said their local High School team were in the playoffs and they were excited.

The preacher began to preach, well he began to talk actually. There was no sermon, he talked at a Sunday morning service for 45 minutes on the history of that schools football team.

Many preachers no longer call their Sermons “sermons”. They call them “talks”.

Our church is uber-solid, fundamental baptist with capital B. Preaching is mostly expositional. Music top quality conservative with teaching new hymn and old. Hymnal and big screen, 25 piece orchestra. Fantastic Christian school drawing from county. Outreach to community. Good youth programs. Because we are located on the edge of Watertown that is the home of Maranatha Baptist University, some faculty and students are part of congregation. 50 missionaries. Top drawer church just celebrated 65th birthday.

In town we have two other Baptist churches, preaching and music non-compromised as well. Know and appreciate both pastors.

Most churches in town are typical liturgical Lutheran, Methodist, Moravian, a couple non-denominational, and 2 Catholic parishes. Most would not preach the truth or the Gospel

If pastors would lead the flock to where the food is and feed the sheep like they are instructed, they would find that the people are not there for the coffee bar. They are starving for the whole counsel of God's Word. They are adverse to portions of it because it strikes too uncomfortably close to home. If the sermons were better, it is true that the people would not be starved. There needs to be shepherding by the pastors to whet the appetite so that when the people are in the pasture they are eating well with out being spoon fed.
if the pastor doesn't study, the people won't be interested.
This doesn't excuse the people. They don't need to wait for the pastor. They both have the same High Priest.
