Serval Army bases were renamed.
Recently, President Trump has brought back the original name - BUT using recent GI's whose name matched the CSA generals of which they had previously been named for

Thoughts?

Headlines were just returning names changed by politically correct inanity under the "tear down all history Democrats". Did not know "recent" aspect. Seems a reach to try to justify just returning to historic name.

Example: Braxton Bragg was famous, but as a really bad military strategist and loathed universally. Never could figure out Fort Bragg as a "good" name under ANY thinking.

The original name change was hidden in a DOD $$ bill -
That was the only way it would have passed.

Tell you what - when I now say "Ft Hood" officially it is for Robert Hood , (WW I) but us oldtimers will
affectionally know it means the Colorful CSA General Hood.

As a re-enactor for decades, I served with Company B, 5th Texas Regiment, Hood's Brigade in a number of battles. Pix of me and daughter when I volunteered for the 5th

Also galvanized to blue as sgt in Company I, 3rd Voluntary Infantry Regiment (Confederate POW's from Rock Island Arsenal Camp) who were paroled to serve in the West late in the War.Old Fashioned Sunday 1990 Riverton.jpg

I liked the original names of the Confederate generals.

I agree.

I served in the Marine Corps. We didn't have that problem.

Just a thought. The peace was best administered by the men who fought the war. With few exceptions post war mingling of the troops was described as, ''I felt as though I was among our own troops rather than a former enemy.'' One of the South's best, General John B. Gordon was heard to say after the war, ''Give me Yankee artillery and Confederate infantry and I'll whip any army!'' (something to that effect)

"The majority of those bases were built in the early 1900's and the local congressman and senators wanted to use names that would have the greatest local support. Even if the named "hero" was a slave holder and a bad leader. Look at Braxton Bragg's "accomplishments" as an excuse."

Hmm Gen Grant married into a family that owned slaves. In fact, slaves constructed his home near his father-in-law’s plantation, and there came a time when he supervised those slaves on his wife's familial estate."

Looking at the destruction he did in Georgia and South Carolina, I think Sherman would have been proud to have a tank named after him.

I've been told you are not to even mention his name in those States

DR Bob - have you by chance ever do a re-enactment in Salem, VA?

Several years ago, there were discussions on what it would have taken for the South to have won.

One guy, prob mid 30s said hold on, a set of $10 walkey talkies would have done it.

I was totally stunned. He was absolutely correct

No. Flew in there for big national evens (20k soldiers) in Lynchburg/Appomattox area, Petersburg.
When I was in the Virginia Defense Force - we would attend to do parking, security, ect. Always a big event.

I did big national events (made into movies for National Historic Military Parks) with 20,000 at First Manassas, Shiloh, Antietam, Gettysburg, Sailor's Creek/Petersburg, and Appomattox. Most events were smaller, local with a few hundred soldiers. Also did living history encampments. But I was in Texas in the 80's and Wyoming since, so a long drive and time commitment. And as a pastor, weekend events were not "easy".Fort - Fiddlin' around.jpg

One year at Salem - there was a (real) wedding. Bride & Groom in WBTS dress and officiated by a WBTS Chaplain (ordained minister)
It was held after public hours - but those of us in the VADF (in our regular GI unifiorm) were invited to attend.

side note, one of our VADF members was part of the American Revolution re-enactor!
