Kohberger beats the death penalty.

1) Is the death penalty required, prohibited or silent in Scripture about the death penalty?

Today (23 July 2024 Bryan Kohberger was sentenced to four life sentences (without parole) for the murders he committed in Idaho.
He avoided the death penalty by pleading guilty.
Should the DA have went for the Death Penalty?

Is it possible - say in 30 years a Governor would commute his sentence and allow parole?

What privileges should be withheld?

Other comments?

Scripture very clearly states the government wields the power of the sword, therefore, the death penalty is biblical for the government to implement.

However, Christians should not support the death penalty.

The Apostle Paul identified himself as the worst of sinners because he had persecuted Christians leading to their death.

He states God demonstrated mercy toward him (a murderer by his own confession) as an example that is to be followed by other Christians.

We should show mercy, as far as it is in our power, to sinners, even murderers.

Peace to you

But when Paul killed a Christian - even by authority of the State - they had not committed a crime worthy of the death penalty.

The “government” has never implemented the death penalty as God has commanded throughout history…. That is without bias and on the basis of at least two witnesses.

But that doesn’t change the teaching that God demonstrated mercy toward Paul for the purpose of giving Christians an example to follow concerning our showing mercy to sinners, even murderers like Paul.

Supporting the death penalty, as a Christian, is contrary to that teaching.

Peace talks you

Then I suppose we will have to agree to disagree
as I do see the death penalty as an appropriate
action for crimes such as first degree murder.

What about the scriptural teaching that Christians should follow the example of God in showing mercy toward the murderer, Paul?

Cain committed murder, God showed mercy. Moses committed murder. God showed mercy. David committed murder. God showed mercy. Paul committed murder. God showed mercy.

Throughout history, God used ungodly men or countries to punish people and nations, even with death.

Christians are called to be different.

But we can disagree.

Peace to you
