Depends. Two months. Two years.
I would say at least one full year! I know there are some who knew each other for a very short time - but those are the rare exceptions.
It takes time to build a good relationship.

The Joshua Harris "chaperones are required and only courting is allowed" is legalism, IMHO.
I've never read Joshua Harris. I think the Bible has some great principles for courtship, but none for "dating" as I did when I was young and our society (even Christians) encourages. In Christian college the leaders would say, "You gotta have a date for the banquet," and I always wondered why. I dated, but the girl usually cut it off after one or two dates because I was very serious about finding the right one (or I could have had bad breath--who knows!) :Coffee
