Procter and Gamble (P&G) has joined a growing list of large American corporations offering domestic partnership benefits to
homosexual employees. Nearly 150 companies listed on the Fortune 500 now offer domestic partnership benefits, even though the actual number of workers looking to receive the benefits for their domestic partners is small.

The only power we have is economic. If we don't like something a company is doing, we just don't buy their products and let them know this and why.

Saggy,

All the lists I know of are from pro-gay organizations. Of course, I use them to figure out who to patronize ;) .

I haven't seen anything on the Internet, but I think most folks would have a hard time avoiding everyone who offered benefits to domestic partners. It seems to be rapidly becoming the norm.

True, especially when you realize that there are very few distinct corporate entities anymore. It seems like everything is owned by just a few.

Still, the Salvation Army's recent decision to reverse its decision to extend benefits to domestic partners should give folks temporary hope. Sometimes, things do change.

Higher product costs as a customer, lower earnings as an investor. (These benefits are very expensive!)

The list is too long (unfortunately) and growing. Here are a few: American Airlines, American Express, BP Amoco, Apple Computer, AT&T, Avon , Barnes & Noble, Ben & Jerry’s , Boeing, CBS, Chase, Coca-Cola, Compaq, Delta, Disney, Enron, Episcopal Church of the United States (!!??!!), Ford, Geocities, HP, Home Depot, Jewish Board of Family & Children’s Services (!?!), El Al Airlines (Israel!!), Merrill-Lynch, MGM, Microsoft, Nike, Procter & Gamble, Sony, Target, Unitarian Universalist Association, Union of American Hebrew Congregations, United Airlines, United Way, Visa, etc.

There is a better way to look at this.

In every industry, there are companies that withstood intense public and private pressure from the gay and lesbian community.

For instance, Exxon never offered such benefits. In 1999, Exxon acquired Mobil and shortly after the acquisition Mobil announced that it will end new enrollment for same-sex spousal benefits previously enjoyed at Mobil.

As opposed to... what? A company that offers no benefits to its employees? As single people, they get benefits indivudually. As a couple, they get benefits as well, but in a package instead of two individual policies. More efficient, thus cheaper.
Put your own phobias aside, and answer again: How does this hurt you? Why do you wish to prevent others from having joint benefits, aside from your own homophobia?

I don't know if we can boycott "everything", but I personally boycott convenience stores that sell pornography.

It is just what I need to do.

Froggie,
Yes, I boycott for other reasons, but all are ultimately religious. I boycott Champion paper products because they are a heavy polluter of East Tennessee streams, which belong to God (Psa 24:1). As much as possible, I do not buy Chinese products for many of the same reasons you stated.

No one is saying homosexuals should not be allowed to have health insurance. They are free to purchase it themselves. And no, we cannot mandate insurance for everyone. The second we do, what do you think will happen to the cost of insurance and medical services? They will skyrocket. If you don't believe me, look at states where auto insurance is mandatory, and compare the prices before and after legislation. We need to fix our health system, but simply mandating insurance for all won't fix the problems. That's like trying to solve gun violence by mandating everyone own a gun.

I work for a company that not only offers these benefits, we have an administrator who is the gay/lesbian advocate. Should I quit ? I won't. God has put me here, I make a good wage, & can offer my church more support.
Do all the christians on this board boycott Walt Disney ? Watch ESPN ? Read newspapers ?Or view art ? Fly ?Isn't it impossible to boycott everything ? I could live in a mountain somewhere.....

I think what you should do is let your light shine as much as you can, & remain in prayer, reading the bible.

Froggie,
I understand the point was not about socialized medicine. But one of your arguments for private companies giving insurance and other benefits to gay and lesbian partners was the "uninsured" person problem. I was just relating to that argument.

Mr. Curtis,
Should you quit? That's your call. It's a decision that the Biblically informed conscience must make.
Can we boycott everything? No, nor should we. We don't have that option. But we can boycott companies that blatently and intentionally violate Christian standards. Again, it is a stewardship issue that must be decided by the Biblically informed conscience.

The whole entire chapter of Leviticus is thrown out by Christians because of Jesus's blood on the cross, except for the passages about homosexuality! I don't see any of you protesting companies that sell products with animal blood (Lev 19:26 Ye shall not eat any thing with the blood) or protesting barber shops for violating Lev 19:27 (Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.)

What about companies that work on the sabbath? That's even a commandment--you know, of the famous 10? You may have heard of them. Homosexuality didn't even make it in the top 10, yet you protest that over a company who pays their employees to work on sunday?

I think that people don't like homosexuality because it grosses them out, and because of ignorance, and thus they will find any reason to justify their repulsion and ignorance. The Baptist church used the bible to promote racism and segregation in the 50's. Today they use the bible to promote homosexual intolerance

Brilliance, absolute brilliance.

Do you work on Sunday? Would you quit your job because it pays other people to work on Sunday? Would you suport boycotting companies who do pay people to work on Sunday? Would you sit by and silently approve of people bombing businesses who pay people to work on Sunday? - because many fundamentalists do silently support these types of terrorist actions against gay nightclubs or incidents of gay bashing. Froggie, your point is well made and well spoken. I wish other people would stop using the Bible as a crutch for their hatred or discomfort.

So why would companies offer such benefits? Because they are competing for good employees. And those that do offer benefits like this will get an advantage over those that don't.

And that costs them more than offering the benefits.

It's not just companies. Not long ago, a major corporate move was set to go to a suburb of Austin. The tax incentives were suddenly held up, and the county commissioners demanded that the company end same-sex benefits before they were granted any incentives. The company told them that there were other communities in the area that would welcome them as they were, and closed negotiations. The commissioners quickly reconsidered.

Money talks. There aren't enough homophobes left to justify angering everyone else.
