It isn't a book I use very often, but I own a copy of the New Jerusalem Bible (I bought it so I could read the Apocrypha). Recently, I noticed that Zechariah 4:11-14 was MISSING! Is it part of Roman Catholic canon to exclude these verses? Do I have a defective printing? Is anyone familiar with this issue?

    thanks,
    Eric

My New Jerusalem Bible has those verses. I
    copied them exactly for you: (v. 11 - 14)

Then I went on to ask him, 'what is the meaning
of these two olive trees, to right aqnd left of the
lamp-stand?' (And I went on to ask him further,
'What is the meaning of the two olive brances
discharging oil through the two golden
openings?') He replied, 'do you not know what
they are?' I said, 'No, my lord.' he said, 'These
are the two annnointed ones in attendance on
the Lord of the whole world.'

I never use this Bible; I bought it in order to do
what you did! And I have no idea why they put
some of this in parentheses; I could not find any
    notations regarding this.

In my humble opinion, you are reading a perverse copy of the bible. The only bible out there that has been documemted as being the true word of our Lord is the King James Version. So if you want to read the word of God as it was intended, then you need to get a copy of the King James Bible.

LauraB, not every thread on this board needs to turn into a KJVO flamewar. Please address those comments to threads where they would have something to do with the topic of discussion.

Thanks, Abiyah... I guess I have a bad copy. I haven't been all that impressed with the NJB either, it seems quite eccentric actually. Not that I'd expect to be impressed with a Roman Catholic translation...

Yes, Eric; I agree that it is an interesting book.
Some of the pseudopigrapha in it has been
interesting and very similar to reading the snip-
pets I have read of such books as the Narnia
and Camelot books. Let me immediately explain
that I have read in none of these books more
than a few paragraphs, but they seem similar.

By the way, i used to have one of their
"Serendipity" Bibles, but it is not in the down-
stairs library. When I find it, if we still have it, I
will see if these verses appear in it.

    Hey Eric,

I don't have an answer on your NJB question, but I don't think LauraB was trying to start a KJVO flamewar. She's brand new to the forum, and that was her very first post. From her profile, I get the impression she's a genuine, well meaning person, so give her the benefit of the doubt. [IMG] I don't think she was posting to be argumentative.

I have a relatively new translation of the catholic Bible at home and will look at it tonight.

I have two of my collector's Bibles here in the office, both King James with the Apocrypha, one printed in 1817 by M. Carey in Philadelphia and the other the other printed in 1850 by Phinney & Co in Buffalo, NY and both have the above mentioned verses.

I apologize to LauraB if I misread her motives but her post was quite a bit off-topic, and it gets just a little frustrating to be constantly told I'm "perverse" or any number of other colorful words because I read the NKJV instead of the KJV. If someone wants to say that KJV is the only good translation, then that's fine, and you have every right to express that opinion, but please post it in either a new thread or in one of the many, many threads that already exist on this topic.

In my humble opinion, I think this probably needs to be started in another thread because he was simply using the book to read the Apocrypha (while not inspired by God---does contain translations of ancient documents which might contain history.) This would be no different than reading some of the writings of Josephus as a history book as long as you understand it is not Biblical.

I do have a question, since you brought it up... What did people do for a Bible for 1500 years?

I agree with you Brian, I opened a new subject for LauraB if you want to go there and say something. I think Eric_b is a little jealous because LauraB is using his registered trademark "B". Oh, well, it was funny when I thought came up with it. I'll shut up now. ;)

Who documented the KJV as the only true word of God? What standard was used to make that determination? Where can I find a copy of that document? Thanks. [IMG]

I got my third KJB recently.
    Ordered it on-line. It is a KJV1873.
    I already have a KJV1611 and
    a stealth KJV(probably 1769).

    My KJV1873 is packaged with
    a NIV, a NLT, and a NASB.
It is a four barreled cannon [IMG]

Really having a fun time with
"different is NOT the same" [IMG]

Maybe i should grab back my NKB
    from my daughter?

Eric, your verses are not missing...just look after chapter 4, verse 6, and that section is inserted there. The text note says, "V.v.6b-10a are read after v.14". I'd suspect that some early OT documents (probably Septuagint) have this chapter recorded this way.

I have SEVERAL copies of the NJB/JB Bibles, and enjoy reading them! The best is a red leather bound copy, coffee table size, with Dali prints. Interestingly, Tolkien himself was involved in the French-English Translation of the JB!
