    Hi all,

This is my first posting here. It comes in response to what I've read on the posts concerning Christian hard rock music. I felt that this specific debate between what makes a Christian band distinctive from a secular one desered its own thread. Here is my take:

First off, I graduated with my theology degree from a fundamental Baptist college, so I know that side. Yet, in the past couple of years I have seen many concerts including: Pantera, Slayer, Megadeth, Marilyn Manson, and the grand daddies of the dark side, Black Sabbath. At the same time I have seen many Christian shows as well including The Benjamin Gate and the much talked about P.O.D.

Having experanced all of this I can say with great authority that the differances between TRUE Cgristian bands and secular bands are huge. For sake of time, let's look at the language they use. case in point: During Ozzfest P.O.D. were the only ones that didn't use the "F" word. Not to mention they were the only ones other than Ozzy himself, that envoked the blessongs of the Lord on what they were doing. These suttle differances made a BIG differance.

    Welcome (evil laugh) [IMG]

It's easy to explain why you don't see P.O.D. as evil. You can only submerse yourself into something before you became "inoculated" to that particular thing, and eventually you get to the point where it no longer shocks you. Of course P.O.D. wouldn't look evil in comparison to Ozzy, Manson, etc. A person starting with a crooked yardstick can never measure anything accurately.

Well. I personnally have no problem with P.O.D or most other christian metal. It's good music! I see no basis for saying that they do not play christian music. So it is in a genre that some of you do not appreciate. Does that mean that God does not appreciate hearing his praises sung in that style of music? I believe that there are a few things God wants in music: Honesty, Truth, and Quality. By quality, I mean the best someone can give. That's my take on things.

    God Bless you all

Yeah... I wager King David could really get down and put some hot licks on his lyre. To me rock is rock... Christian or otherwise!... But then I'm a devotee to good old time religion and good old time christian hymns... God is listening!... Brother(give me that old time religion)Glen [IMG]

Welcome Cash! Always good to have another intelligent Christian to learn from. Just wondering, what's the number 1611?

I don't know, seems to me like David was a POD kinda guy. Incredible musical talent, huge heart, loved the Lord, and loved dancing and loud music. [IMG] Good old time religion? Ugh, I hate that phrase. Give me Christ and his Words, anything outside of that is just fluff.

Refreshed, your assuming that rock and POD shocks everyone at first. False assumption, as I can attest to there being at least one exception. Your also implying that there is something other then POD's music to be shocked and upset about, but I've seen no evidence for that.

    God bless,
    ~JD

Talking about King David, allow me to interject....

1 Samuel 16:16 Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

If we look into a few other verses where the word "cunning" was used...

Genesis 25:27 And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents.

Exodus 38:23 And with him was Aholiab, son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, an engraver, and a cunning workman, and an embroiderer in blue, and in purple, and in scarlet, and fine linen.

"Cunning" is a very interesting word to me. Seems like a fox is cunning.

I know that david loved the Lord, and sang to him, and played his harp with great skill, to the Lord.

But I speculate that he may have also used his musical talent to manipulate people. Like maybe he played a little music for Bathsheba as part of his plan to seduce her.

Etymology of "cunning." Middle English, from present participle of can know.

Cunning simply means he had knowledge and skill, not that he was a trickster.
