I am looking for scripture that supports the fact that the church members should support the shepherd( pastor) instead of trying to set up their own agendas and causing strife in the church. We have some that do not tithe and are rarely in attendance that want to control the church and will pick at the Pastor to try and wear him down. The pastor is a wonderful man that has been with us for 15 years and has done everything to please all members. So if you know the supporting scripture or there was a book i read years ago that quoted the scriptures of supporting the shepherd of the church. Thanks Bob

Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honor, sepecially they who labour in the word and doctrine. For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward. Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses.

Paul's message at the Preacher's Conference near Ephesus gives us indication of the value and worth of a pastor:
A godly pastor will be built up among the people and given an inheritance among all the body.

Sadly, an ungodly pastor will settle for verses like Hebrews 13:7,17, rip them from context, and DEMAND obedience to his every whim. That, sadly, is often the case in my circles.

If a pastor has to command obedience and loyalty, he is doing something wrong . . .

    Dr. Bob,
It's great to see one pastor who understands Heb. 13:17. A pastor I know did exactly what you said in reference to Heb. 13:17, and then saw several senior deacons leave shortly thereafter.

One of the deacons who stayed on in the church is a friend of mine.

I did a study of the word "obey" in Heb. 13:17, and found out that it doesn't mean what it looks like. Vines Dictionary gives a good understanding of it. It basically means "to be convinced by the behavior and life of the leader".

I don't know how the translators got the word "obey" from the Greek. It gives a lot of fuel for those who have a desire to lord over.

I really feel that the church members need to put their foot down on these members. Our church has rules that every member argreed to when then joined the church. They have to tithe and be in at least one service a week to have priveages in the church. Stand behind your Pastor and maybe they need a old fashion thing like church disapline. Maybe I am too old fashion, but I'm only 29. Anyways this is discord among the brother. Your Pastor is your brethren. Your Pastor may feel eventually that he can't win and then he might find another church. It is our Job to stand behind the Pastor, always even if we don't understand his postion and agree with him..
