I recently came across this verse in my daily devotion time and I can't help but think there is something significant in the last phrase of this verse that I am not understanding fully. The phrase is "then began men to call upon the name of the Lord."

    Any thoughts?

    Hey, Tee-Fish-er!!

Before any liberal gets a chance to go first and deny the trueness of Chapters 1-11 -- here goes the conservative Blackbird!

If you read the context of the whole of chapter 4 from the beginning--God gives testamony to Cain's side of the family. Read verse 16, "And Cain went out from the presence of the Lord . . . " Cain's mind wasn't on the Lord God--therefore, where one's mind is--the mouth will be sure to follow. Cain failed to mention God altogether--even when he was putting it all together for the advancement of civilization. He never called upon the name of the Lord. Cain was a God denier! Cain was as lost as a BillyGoat!

Now, read on over to verse 25-26. Adam and Eve have another son named Seth in the place of Abel. Seth was God appointed. Beginning fresh and anew it was Seth who began to confess the Lord God. For the Bible says that whosoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved! It was Seth's family who would eventually bring birth to coming Messiah!

    Blackbird,

Thanks for the reply. I agree. I still would like to nail down a little further what is meant by calling upon the name of the Lord in this verse. Does it mean calling upon the Lord for salvation as in Romans 10:13? Does it mean that men began to pray on a regular basis? Is it what set them apart as God's people, as the Lord told Ananias about Saul in Acts 9:11? I think now that you have put it in the context of Cain's lostness, the last one would certainly be applicable. Maybe all three.

Note that the name LORD is in all caps. This always means the specific name YAHWEH or "I AM" is involved. So the literal statement is that men began to use the name "I AM" at that time when they prayed. Obviously, it also means there was some kind of revival going on where men actually took the time to seriously call on the LORD in a way they had not before.

Cain's family tree fits the description of the civilization found in Romans 1: 18-32. That bunch had everything on their minds but God. Romans 1: 28 reads, "And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind . . . " The spirit of Cain remains alive even today. Jude speaks of people who "go the way of Cain." Emptymindedness!

Thankfully, the spirit of Seth remains alive today also. These are folks who are God minded! Evidently, it was Seth's family who experienced the first "spiritual awakening." They began to call upon the name of the Lord. I believe this speaks of a period from point Salvation leading to point Seperation leading to point Sanctification. The phrase "calling upon the name of the Lord" is a continual "calling upon the name of the Lord."
