Which Baptist are you?

Hello. I don't know really what kind of Baptist I am. In my country, Finland, there are only two kinds of Baptists. The vast majority of those who call themselves Baptists are charismatic Baptists (about 6000 persons or a bit more, most are Finnish-speaking and the few remaining Swedish-speaking). Then there is one tiny local Baptist assembly in Tampere, the second largest city in Finland, which calls itself Traditional Baptist Assembly. I guess in English they would call themselves Regular Baptists. They are not charismatic, but oppose that movement. They are so called 4 point Calvinist. I have read from Torbet's history of Baptists that the Baptists came to my country in about 1870. I do not know what branch of Baptists they were, but in the 20th century it seems there has existed only arminian Baptists in Finland, except for this one Regular Baptist assembly which was started in 1996, by a missionary from USA with Finnish ancestry. As for me I belonged to a charismatic Baptist assembly about two years until I separated from it in june ´99. I requested to be rebaptized since I came out, but the Regular Baptist missionary-pastor refused to baptize me, because he regarded my immersion as valid, which I received from the charismatic Baptists. Since that I requested rebaptism from another branch of Baptists and a man came over from Germany to baptize me. But all since june ´99 I have been without local fellowship and very lonesome. The churches in my area are Lutheran, Methodist, Russian Orthodox, Charismatic Baptist, Pentecostal, Word of Faith, Salvation Army, Jehovah Witnesses, Mormon, SDA, Laestadian (a Lutheran sect), i.e. all are sacramentalists or arminian or pedobaptist or otherwise legalistic or heretical. I definitely disdain to be called charismatic Baptist, and thankfully no one ever calls me that because all know how much I oppose charismatism. Those I fellowship with by email are all from other countries than my home country and call themselves Baptists. My symphaties are with those who baptize by immersion and who believe, preach and contend for the Evangel of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Gospel of free and sovereign grace. Because of this I have received much scorn from those who profess to know God in my own town and country. But anyway, I don't know what to call myself, probably a separatist Particular Baptist, or a New Testament Baptist, or Biblicist Baptist. The designation is secondary to me (if I'm worthy of any), yet by the grace of God I am what I am.

Hey, I am new to this (don't usually do chat rooms) but thought that I would enter into this discussion.

First and foremost - I am a follower of Christ. I love the Lord and was saved 5 years ago by His grace. I grew up in church and was baptized as a baby and confirmed at the age of twelve, but did not accept Christ as my personnal Saviour until I was 40. Didn't realize there was a difference.

Second - I am a Southern Baptist. I read the e-mail concerning Soutern Baptists and believe that basically one could write an article like that concerning all denominations. We all have problems within our churches. But I have to put a plug in here for the Southern Baptists.

As a Southern Baptist disaster relief volunteer I can tell you that when a disaster hits - the SBC disaster relief teams are called out immediately by Fema along with the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. When the September terrorists attacks occurred, we were called out that day to go to New York and to the Pentagon, and many did go. We have gone to all major disaster areas in this world and are still going.

We may have problems (like all other denominations) but we are serving the Lord by administering to his people. I know that other denominations are also, but I am glad to be part of a Southern Baptist Church and the denomination.

I belong to an Independent Freewill Baptist Church. It is a little country church where everyone loves the Lord. My daughter loves her Sunday school class. She was in our Christmas play as an angel. It was our first play and the kids done wonderfully. We are a small congregation but we have seen many come to know the Lord. People shout and praise the Lord freely. I am thankful that Jesus led me to this church. Talk soon!!! susanpet

I belong to a church affiliated with the SBC. I also support the Founders Ministry of the SBC.

 

We are independent fundamental baptist but... I'm also wishy-washy. (that's southern talk for flexible). I was raised with the old camp meeting style preaching and singing and I like that...but I also like the teaching style of preaching and the more formal style of music.
I have found alot of the reformed baptist links with audio sermons which are excellent teaching sermons.

 

Y'know, I couldn't tell you what my church is. I think we're unaffiliated. But I also think our Sunday School literature comes from a National Baptist Convention source.

Personally, I am conservative, maybe even leaning to fundamentalist (NOT Hyles-type, though).

Southern Baptist, but not too crazy about some of what has gone on in recent years--but then again I'm not completely supportive of what's happening in the CBF. Maybe I ought to join another denomination, or a Bible church--LOL
