What was the sin of Sodom, Gomorrha, and their neighboring cities? Jude tells us this:

"Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire."

This text sets a distinction between "fornication" and "going after strange flesh." The latter statement is an obvious reference to the desire of the men of Sodom to have carnal relations with Lot's guests; but the text also says that the other cities round about were given to this same sin, along with the sin of fornication.

Gomorrah and the other neighboring cities were not participants in the attempt to use Lot's guests. Notwithstanding, these cities are said to be guilty of the crime of "going after strange flesh." Ergo, the contention that the manner in which the men of Sodom approached Lot's guests was their only crime is falacious.

The sin of Sodom is the sin for which that city will be in eternal infamy and of which some in it's sister cities were likewise guilty

We also note from the text that the sin of Sodom, along with all other sins, will incur the eternal vengeance of God if not purged. As Peter said of these same cities,

"making them an ensample unto those that after should live ungodly."

    Dear Mark,

I have the feeling that once we found out what this sin is/was we would wish we hadn't.

The "strange flesh" thing they were giving themselves over to was the sin of homosexuality and beastality. God wiped Sodom and her sister cities off the map for the perversion of sexual desires one toward another. They were mocking God with their sexual burning of each other. Men with women having sex outside of the realm of marriage is a mockery of God's love toward the Lord Jesus Christ! Men with men and women with women in the act of homosexuality is a mockery of the instutution of marriage and is a mockery of the Lord Jesus Christ and His love toward His Father!

That's the truth! God didn't destroy Sodom and the cities because they were "taking candy from the baby!"--He wiped them off the map because they were mocking Him with their perverted form of sex! "Be not deceived! God is not mocked! For whatsoever a man soeth, that shall he also reap!"

I think the difference is that Soddom and Gamorrah were blatantly committing sexual acts publicly, purely for gratification, out in the open, for all to see.

The prevailing attitude, even among non-religious folk, seems to be, if you're gonna do it, do it someplace where I don't have to see it or be exposed to it.

    Ezekiel writes about Sodom.
EZE 16:49 " `Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. [50] They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.

    Ahd the context:

EZE 16:44 " `Everyone who quotes proverbs will quote this proverb about you: "Like mother, like daughter." [45] You are a true daughter of your mother, who despised her husband and her children; and you are a true sister of your sisters, who despised their husbands and their children. Your mother was a Hittite and your father an Amorite. [46] Your older sister was Samaria, who lived to the north of you with her daughters; and your younger sister, who lived to the south of you with her daughters, was Sodom. [47] You not only walked in their ways and copied their detestable practices, but in all your ways you soon became more depraved than they. [48] As surely as I live, declares the Sovereign LORD, your sister Sodom and her daughters never did what you and your daughters have done.

EZE 16:49 " `Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. [50] They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen. [51] Samaria did not commit half the sins you did. You have done more detestable things than they, and have made your sisters seem righteous by all these things you have done. [52] Bear your disgrace, for you have furnished some justification for your sisters. Because your sins were more vile than theirs, they appear more righteous than you. So then, be ashamed and bear your disgrace, for you have made your sisters appear righteous.

EZE 16:53 " `However, I will restore the fortunes of Sodom and her daughters and of Samaria and her daughters, and your fortunes along with them, [54] so that you may bear your disgrace and be ashamed of all you have done in giving them comfort. [55] And your sisters, Sodom with her daughters and Samaria with her daughters, will return to what they were before; and you and your daughters will return to what you were before. [56] You would not even mention your sister Sodom in the day of your pride, [57] before your wickedness was uncovered. Even so, you are now scorned by the daughters of Edom and all her neighbors and the daughters of the Philistines--all those around you who despise you. [58] You will bear the consequences of your lewdness and your detestable practices, declares the LORD.

today we have people mostly liberal religionist who preach and teach that homosexuality is not sin. this type of teacher is spreading a dangerous falsehood and a wicked sense of security for those who engage in such a depraved activity.

i call on all liberal teachers and preachers to resign and leave their office

Sexual sin is a result, not a root cause.

Ezekiel tells us the root cause of Sodom being overthrown:

EZE 16:49 " `Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. [50] They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.

Also, the Apostle Paul tells us that sexual sin is not the root cause:

RO 1:21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. [22] Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools [23] and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.
RO 1:24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. [25] They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen.

In both of these cases, sexual sin is a result, not a root cause.

For those who focus on the sexual sin as the root cause, they miss the incredible warning given by God through Ezekiel and Paul.
The roots causes are being arrogant, overeating, unconcerned, not helping the poor and needy, not being thankful, etc.

Sexual sin is one result of failing to do what God requires. It is incredibly amazing to see much of the church doing exactly what God warns against, and thinking that they can condemn sexual sin, while sinning themselves in the root causes, and thinking that nothing will happen to them.

    Just to answer the question that must be hot on your mind;
No, I do not condone sexual sin in any form.

let me see if i get this right, are you saying that Christians are not to condemn sin because we have not addressed the root causes? does all the root causes of sin need to be addressed or else Christians should remain silent. do you have any reasonable biblical precedence for your stance? it sounds to me that your using liberal reasoning to interpret scripture. nothing in the bible states that root causes of sin are an exemption from condemning the dangerous and the wrong lifestyles that harm people such as homosexuality. i believe that homosexuality is the most harmful end of the societys last chance to repent.

The sin is bad there is no doubt but look at it like this for a minute:

    Gen 18:23-24
23 And Abraham drew near, and said, Wilt thou also destroy the righteous with the wicked?
24 Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein?
    (KJV)

    Gen 18:28
28 Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous: wilt thou destroy all the city for lack of five? And he said, If I find there forty and five, I will not destroy it.
    (KJV)

    Gen 18:31
31 And he said, Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the Lord: Peradventure there shall be twenty found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for twenty's sake.
    (KJV)

    Gen 18:32
32 And he said, Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak yet but this once: Peradventure ten shall be found there. And he said, I will not destroy it for ten's sake.
    (KJV)

Oooops .... I guess there wasn't even 10. Do you see how complete was the sinfulness. It was utterly corrupt (all kinds of sins) and the entire population was against God.

This also shows Gods mercy. He would have saved the entire city for 10 people.....something to think about.

Sexual sin is a result, not a root cause.

Good point. The cities were destroyed because not one righetous person could be found within it. Sin was not the cause of their destruction, their unrigheous hearts, which resulted in their sin, was the cause of destruction.

A good thing to note, even though God destroyed Sodom, he didn’t destroy one righteous soul…. Lot and his daughters were spared……

Let us see the end of the story of Lot. His wife was turned to a pillar of salt because she coveted what she left behind in Sodom. Lot instead of returning to his Uncle Abraham who was a righteous man because of the lifestyle he was around in Sodom hid in a cave with his two daughters. These two daughters seduced him and had sex with him and bore their Dad children. Yes Peter called him a righteous man because while he was in Sodom he abhorred the sin but when he fled Sodom he made a terrible mistake by not returning to the righteous tents of his Uncle. His two daughters were spared the destruction of Sodom because of the prayers of their Great Uncle Abraham but they still had the spirit of Sodom which should show us that incest was another sexual sin of those wicked cities.

I have heard people say Lot was not at fault because they got him drunk but that is ridiculous because he did not have to drink the strong drink in the first place.

    I have heard
