NEW YORK (AP) - ABC says it edited the word "Jesus" out of a recent broadcast so viewers wouldn't be offended. For many, it had the opposite effect.

The bleeped Jesus on "The View" has drawn the ire of the Rev. Jerry Falwell, some conservative media watchdogs and even the women whose on-air conversation was altered.

"It is political correctness run amok," said Elizabeth Swasey, spokeswoman for the Media Research Center.

On the May 23 edition of "The View," Meredith Vieira noted that the daily weigh-ins of her dieting co-host, Joy Behar, had ended.

"Yes, and thank you, thank you, Jesus, is all I have to say," Behar replied.

Her words were aired live in much of the country, but when ABC broadcast a taped version of the show on the West Coast, "Jesus" was edited out.

"Under the circumstances, we were concerned it would be offensive to our audience," Hoover said.

ABC's broadcast of a racy Victoria's Secret fashion special in November prompted complaints to the Federal Communications Commission which ruled that it did not violate indecency regulations.

Five days after the Behar incident, hosts of "The View" noted they had received about 100 letters of complaint.

"It was stupid to beep that," co-host Star Jones said. "They let us say all kinds of things on TV, but they beep Jesus? That makes no sense."

Falwell, in a newspaper column, said he believed ABC's action was wrong. "Conservative Catholics and evangelical Christians are expected to accept this double standard and keep our mouths shut," he said.

I bet if she thanked Buddha, or St. Jude, or Krishna, they would have left it in...

You can say any word on tv you want to, except Jesus. I'm with Adam.

It is shameful, but knowing that "Disney" owns "ABC", it doesn't surprise me.

When I first read the quote that was edited, my first inclination was that they edited it out because they believed many would interpret that as taking Jesus' name in vain. But then, I thought, hey this is ABC. Since when do they care about what is decent or offensive to Christians? These are the people who brings us NYPD Blue and other such shows with obsenities on a weekly basis.

How long before they throw folks in jail for saying his name ?

Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, sweetest name I know.
    Fills my every longing,
keeps me singing as I go.

Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Romans 13:12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

Once there was a time when no one dared to use foul language on the air, or to show even a hint of nudity.
This was the same time when prayer, bibles, and the ten commandments were allowed in our schools.

Today there is no end to the rude language on t.v., the radio, and in print.
Today children carry guns to school, disrespect thier teachers and parents, and are taught about evolution, abortion, and homosexuality.

And now people wonder when someone delets the name of Jesus.

(Lets not forget that for many years now, people have made a habit of calling CHRISTmas X-mas so people wouldn't be offended. This is just another sign post along the road).

Um..I just write Xmas to save time. I never thought of anything else. When I write on nice cards or writing paper, I write the entire word out.

I think bleeping out "Jesus" was insane. But I never expect TV network executives to have any good taste or common sense. It saves me a lot of disappointment.

I dont think they should have bleeped Jesus' name. It didnt sound to me like she was saying it in vain. I did see the clip on foxnews, unbleeped.
Someone told me once that the X in X-mas stands for the cross........

    His peace to all-L

It's a sorry state of our society when you can't mention the only name that saves a person from hell.
I feel like the time clock is winding down. Jesus is soon returning and I thank God I know Him!

Sorry... I meant to say, also, that they will usually bleep out the name of Jesus if it's used for praise or witnessing or proselytizing... things of that nature... they're afraid of offending somebody that doesn't believe... however, they usually don't bother to bleep it out if it's used in a derogatory or blasphemous mannor...

FYI the X in Xmas is an old Greek abreviation for Christ, as in xi,ro,epsilon, tau, omega, sigma. The X being the first letter of the word in Greek. (I learned this piece of info in my Homiletics class. Some young preacher boy piped up, "Dr. Weeks [a dear old saint if there ever was one], why are you leaving Christ out of Xian?" Dr. Weeks was doing some writting on the blackboard showing us how to set up an outline. Boy, could Dr. W. work fast. At this point, Dr. Weeks set the record straight. Something about "Do you remember your Greek class young man?.....")
