Ok, don't hit me because I'm not a Baptist but I didn't know where else to put this thread. I would like opinions on Charles Stanley and his teachings. My father was a big fan of his, don't know if he still is. I'm sure he meant well when he forced us to watch him on Sunday mornings, but he did not live by example so I have a hard time catching on to anything he deems a worthy cause.

Hi. I think Charles Stanley is pretty good. He has been a sound teacher for many years and a faithful man of God as far as I know.

A person could do a lot worse.

Don't be too hard on dad. We all sin and fall short of the glory of God. Kind of like the founder of the Salvation Army said. He was walking down the streets of London and saw a drunk passed out in the gutter. He said "But for the grace of God, there go I." Meaning, of course, that without having a right relationship with Jesus Christ, being born again and having the righteousness of Christ credited to your account, so to speak, none of us could or do live like we should. Maybe your Dad fell short of being a good example, but really, how do you do as an example to people. I don't mean that in a bad way at all, but just pointing out that without the grace of God all of us fail.

While Charles Stanley is ok, find a local church that you can go to and be taught the Word of God. There is nothing like it. I would rather go to church and Sunday school and bible study more than anything else I do. I just can't get enough of the bible.

If you don't have a church, you might look for a good Southern Baptist Church in your area. Generally speaking, the SBC is a really good place to associate with. I go to a Reformed/Independent Baptist church and enjoy that very much.

I don't know if you are a Christian or not, or if you are just looking, but a really good book to explain God's grace is a little book by Charles Spurgeon called: All Is Grace. I recommend it highly.

    Have a great day

    wishtolearn,

As far as TV preachers go, Charles Stanley is very good in his topical sermons. Personally I prefer expository preaching: explaining and expanding upon passages or chapters of God's Word.

Have you ever attended a Baptist Church? You should give it a try. You'll find it quite a different experience from a Catholic mass. If you do, be sure and go early to Sunday School and church. Sunday School usually starts around 9:30 - 9:45ish. Sunday School is important because that is where you really get to know people, building relationships, and also get into interpersonal Bible study. God I love being Baptist and talking about my Lord Jesus Christ! :D

I appreciate both replies on this topic and allowing me to post it on the Baptist Only forum.

James2: I thought that Charles STanley was a wonderful speaker and I did enjoy his teachings, I especially enjoyed his son. His name escapes me, think it's Charles Jr. maybe. At any rate, my problem with my father is that he claims to be born again, saved ,etc yet doesn't even try to live a Christian life. He lies, is inconsiderate to his wife and others, disrespectful towards his mother and children, has committed fraud in some areas and actually is attempting to do so again. He has left a very bad taste in my mouth and I do not trust anything he says. Therefore, when we were made to watch Charles STanley in the morning, it really was hypocritical for us. This is a guy who couldn't pull himself off of the couch to go to church on major holidays.

JOhn Wells: Please explain to me the difference between the many different denominations of Baptist Churches. Even us "snowbirds" can find plenty of them up here:)

I like Stanley and agree with the above posts.

His style of presentation can be a little wooden sometimes, but I still like him and think that he has a lot of good things to say.

You can listen to him anytime you want at

Hinn must be the most popular false teacher out there. Is that because he is such a bad guy?

Ok, I actually put that in there for humors sake:). I can tell a guy is a fraud especially when it's blatantly obvious. However, his studio audience, are they paid to go on his show or do these poor folks actually think this is real?

I don't know benny hinn or anything about him except when I happen to accidently flip the channel and he is on. I turn if off as fast as I can. I, personally, can't stand him. It is my opinion that he teaches a false gospel.

As for your dad. Well, I don't know him. Based on what you have stated, I would say don't look to him but to Christ for your example. Anyone can claim to be anything they want. That doesn't make it true. How can you tell if someone is a Christian? By their fruits you will know them.
Like I suggested earlier, get the book by Charles Spuregon called All is Grace. It is really good and I think will be a great help to you.

Personally, I believe that most of the TV preachers should be ignored, and most certainly not financially supported. I'm not saying ALL of them, but most.

I certainly see your concerns. It has to be hard to listen a person pound on his bible and force you to watch Stanley, then act like he does. Well, move beyond that.

To me, Christianity is the ONLY way. My life was changed completely by the grace of God. God is working in your life, so be super aware about what is going on. God is great, He knows His sheep and His sheep KNOW Him. Read John, Chapter 10:1-33. I am praying for you and your love ones. Have a great day.

wishtolearn, hi and welcome to Baptistboard. I used to listen to Charles Stanley on the radio every day. You can trust what he teaches, he won't steer you wrong.

Here is an article that explains some of the history of Baptists.
A Brief Survey of Independent Baptist Churches

My prayer (and I'm sure the prayer of most everyone else on this board) is that if you're not saved already, that you would seek the Lord with all your heart and trust Christ alone to save you. Here on the Baptistboard, it may seem like we all disagree with each other on some things, but just ask what you must do to be saved, and you'll find the thing that binds us together is the true Gospel of Christ.

Let us know if you have any salvation questions, there are many people here who would love to help.

Jeremiah 29:12 Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.

Jeremiah 29:13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
