Poll: Lord's Supper Observance

Every other month - second Sunday.

I have no idea of the reasoning but I will find out. Mom is on the Constitutional Committee so she should know.

 

At Zion Primitive Baptist church, Brunswick, GA, we take communion twice a year. We do this at "big meeting time" as my mother calls it.

One of the reasons for twice a year is so Communion will always be special and not common or an everyday type thing. I'm not condemming anyone who has Communion more than twice a year. Personally, I'd like to see us add one or two more a year.

Old Baptist often includes Washing of the Saints Feet as a part of Communion. Which is always beautiful.

Also, we will commune with other Primitive Baptist churches of like faith and order.

Communion is the ultimate!!! I really look toward each one!!

Quarterly, at a special time before the regular evening service. After all, it is the Lord's Supper not the Lord's Breakfast.

 

Weekly, and for several reasons:

- it provides additonal, sensory aspects of worship

- it is one of the (if not the) oldest practices of the Christian church and ties our worship to that of hundreds of millions of Christians around the world

- it keeps the focus of the service from being exclusively on the homily

- it is a tangible reminder of sacrifice and grace

Quarterly, on the Sunday night service.We always have a alter prayer before we pertake of it.

 

I've been at my church for over two years and we have not had a communion service. I know they prepare greatly for the service and preach about not partaking if your heart is not right with the Lord, which we have discussed at lenght, but we have not had a service yet.

 

Our SBC has communion at irregular intervals, but it usually happens once a quarter, sometime in the quarter, and it varies between evening and morning service.

I have often wondered whether the church leadership in the churches I have been in instinctively shies away from communion, because of what the Apostle Paul wrote:

1CO 11:27 Therefore, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. [28] A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup. [29] For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. [30] That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. [31] But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment. [32] When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world.

 

We have ours every quarter. The reasons I've heard for that is also so that it doesn't become too common and everyday to us, and loose it's meaning to us. I do wish we did it more often though. I don't think there would be a problem with monthly.

 

usually monthly, but in the evening. It is considered for the serious believer, not the Sunday morning only attender. That wasn't suppose to sound snotty or sarcastic, just the way we do it. We don't want someone who is visiting or not saved to feel "peer pressure", so it is usually the saved believers who are there for the evning service.

 

Quarterly. I like weekly better-it reminds you of the sacrifice.

I have been in churches that observed the Lord's Supper either quarterly or annually, but never more frequently than that. Seems the prevailing idea was that too frequent meant too common (although I know a few churches that seem to take the yearly idea over from the passover).

The diversity of practice concerning the frequency of the Lord's supper has a fairly long historical precedent among Baptists in the US. When Morgan Edwards recorded findings from visiting Baptist churches throughout the country (about 200 years ago), he noted that there were churches that observed it weekly, monthly, bi-monthly, quarterly, and annually (and perhaps others, I'm just going on memory).

 

The Evangelical Christian-Baptists of the former Soviet Union celebrate the Lord's Supper in the morning on the first Sunday of a month. They use a common cup for the wine (a good red vin ordinaire here locally) and loaves of homemade yeast bread.

 

our church has the Lords tabel on the 5th sunday of the months with 5 sundays and its remembered in our evening service.
dont remember why though

 

Our new church has an interim pastor that does it on the First Sunday in the AM and uses white grape juice. There, wonder how much controversy I just stirred up!?

 

White grape juice!? Good grief, the man is a heretic! Somebody heat up the tar, while I gather up the feathers!

 

My church does it three or four times a year. I know once is around Easter. I have no idea how they pick when they do it.
