Talk about a hot potato.

Nobody wants to jump in because it usually deterioates(sp?) into ugliness. There is an extensive thread on this subject, in the Other Religions forum, but last I looked, it was a food fight.

But.....I can find no scripture that supports the need for speaking in tongues. But I encourage you to use prayer & good Godly counsel in your search for answers. I wish you well.

God has laid down very specific rules and guidelines in the use of tongues in both Corinthians (sorry, I can't remember which or if both) and in Acts. Prayfully read these books in the Bible and ask God for proper discernment of the scriptures.

    Kathy,

Thank you for your inspirational response. I am Assembly of God and believe in the gift of the prayer language. However, I have been told that my belief is not Bible based. I am searching for specific scripture that is to the contrary. I have found plenty of scripture that confirms my belief without interpretation by man, but I have not found any that says it was only for the Apostles and not the New Testament Church.

The book by Jack Hayford -
The Beauty of Spiritual Language - Unveiling the Mystery of Speaking in Tongues

If you accept that the Holy Spirit still gives the gifts, and that one of them is tongues, this book will help you.

Are there any Baptists out there who do believe in the Tongues ? Let's take a poll....

I don't. And I'm not likely to change.

I believe that tongues were real and mostly invoked when an unbelieving Jew was present. I believe that a "tongue" was simply a different language such as a room full of English speakers and a few Spanish only speakers present, tongues were invoked BUT ALWAYS with an interpreter. I believe that the tongues era has ceased and is no longer necessary. Now, if a German Preacher who speaks ONLY German walked into my church and preached in English, then ok, I'll sit up and take notice.

I also do not believe tongues today is biblical. I have seen nothing in the bible about heavenly launage. A close study of tongues in the bible and every instance will show it slowly deminishing in scripture. Iy fulfilled it's purpose, to validate the gospel that was being opreached, and that it was not only for the jews and they believed but for the gentiles also.

    Rom 8:26-27

26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

These verses are about the Holy Spirit praying for us, it is not about speaking in tongues.

That means word we don't speak, and aren't meant to speak. It isn't tongues.

Edited to add one sentence instead of another seperate post.

Since there is no scriptures stating that tongues have ceased, I must say they still exist. That is not an endorsement of the Charismatic movement but simply affirming sola scriptura.

A good book on the subject is ARE MIRACULOUS GIFTS FOR TODAY? FOUR VIEWS, Edited by Wayne Grudem It is a 4 way debate on the subject.

Thank you all so much... I haved learned alot from these threads. I guess the most important would be that no one is going to move on their postion. I mean we should stop discussing (debating, argue, etc, etc, etc.) this topic cause it's going no where. All threads end up the same, no change, and possibly more confusion for noob's who come to these boards. God bless you all

    No can do, ovrdose.

You see, we have a biblical duty and responsibility to correct what we see as incorrect teachings. Incorrect teachings can lead to false doctrine...such as water baptism required for salvation.

If we agree to disagree, then the incorrect teachings continue unchecked.

When asked by the Almighty at Judgement Day why we didn't correct the incorrect teachings, do we really want to answer, "Well, Lord, we agreed to disagree"?

Of course, we can always just shake the dust off our feet, and leave our brethren in their heresies (Titus 3:9-11)....

Ok then show me where speaking in tongues is biblically wrong and incorrect? This was the whole point of my last post. You can't convince me, as much as I can't you. Do all baptist feel this way ? or just those on this board ? I need to check with my pastor and how he feels, cause if so Iam in the wrong denomanation... Biblically the facts are there, and no I dont agree with all the charsamatics of our time. Only the facts I find in the bible is what I base my belief on.

See, ovrdose, I've never actually discussed that point.

I tend to center my discussions of the subject around the "improperly used today" portion.

As has been pointed out again and again, the first time the gift of tongues was given, it resulted in languages that were understood by those present. Peter then likened what had happened to the prophecy of Joel, which indicates that being understood in a human language was the proper way of doing it. Paul rebuked the church of Corinth for using the gift improperly, with several very clear statements that it was not a "primary" gift and shouldn't be given more emphasis than others (much less be given the position of "proving" salvation). It's also been discussed that one verse theology is poor theology; yet, one verse theology is the only thing that supports a "tongue of angels" (1 Cor 13:1).

So you tell me: Why doesn't the position change?

OD is quite correct. This forum is for questions of new believers and a debate is under way in other religions. I provided the link before. The seeker's forum is not the venue for this debate.

If anyone feels that the issue has not been resolved, or at least that their voice was not heard, I'm sure that a new topic can be opened. The scriptures are very specific that this topic is NOT for new believers. See 1 Corinthians and Hebrews 5.

    May God bless you
