    Mornin'!
Figured I'd leave this fore' I head to bed.
Do any know any so called "quotes" from the Bible that are not found in the Word?
Such as..sweat of thy brow, should be sweat of thy face.(KJV)
How about God casting our sins into the sea of forgetfulness? I don't know how many times I've heard that from preachers. I believe they are referring to the passage where God casts our sins into the deepest parts of the sea (Hope I'm quoting it right!)
    Any More? Have Fun...I Hope! :D :(

"God inhabits the praises of His people."

The Footprints story (several people have told me it is their favorite part of the Bible!!)

"God helps those who help themselves"

The one I hate the most:
What does this mean? Okay, so we build this structure like a hospital, right? But we make it cleaner than a hospital, I mean NASA specs clean. Then, it is almost worthy of worship...

Though none have been found in the Bible, (with the possible exception of God inhabiting the praises of His people, for that is in the Scriptures: Psalm 22:3) I believe all so far express the meanings communicated by the Scriptures.

Hey, what about this one? We've all heard it.

"Money is the root of all evil." Proverbs 13:24

You all know what it should be. "The love of money is the root of all evil."

    Aaron,

I'll take exception with "God helps those who help themselves". I don't think that principle is valid.

It's not until we reach the point that we acknowledge that there is nothing we can do to help ourselves and we call on God that He saves us and helps us grow. He doesn't need our help. He equips us for work and gifts us, but doesn't require any assistance from us.

    Peace-

    YSIC

That one is pulled out on me quite a bit….

I still hear people say that Deliliah is the one that cut Samson’s hair…. She didn’t, but she had it done…. ;)

I don’t mind some of those quotes that mean, in essence, the same thing…. However, the misinterpretations of those quotes are a different matter…. [IMG]

BTW, the bible might not say, “spare the rod and spoil the child”, but it certainly means the same thing…..

    Also,
That is not a political correct scripture, especially in these days, where drunken dads and moms are beating their kids…. Nevertheless, (and with the mercy of God) if you do as the scripture says, you have a chance of keeping your child…. Of course, do everything with love……

    "Pride comes before a fall"

Should be "Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall."

    Proverbs 16:18

With all due apologies to the webmaster and all the wonderful people here, the one that bugs me the most is "The truth shall set you free." That is used by so many people and it is truncated to be a complete mistrepresentation of the actual words Jesus said, which are

If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.

In other words we will not know the truth until we hold to Jesus' teachings. There is, otherwise, a lot of times when the truth will not set a person free, but send him to jail, or even hell, instead!

Hey, are we limited to just the Jacobean English translation? Huh, Huh?

"You and your money go to hell" Acts 8:20 TEV (second edition)

Saul fumed with rage. "You son-of-a-*****" he exclaimed to Jonathan. I Samuel 20:30 Living Bible (first edition)

    There are more . . .

Actually, I think that's a very good contemporization of what Saul said. I believe the KJV says, "You son of a perverse rebellious woman!" I bet that was very strong stuff in 1611.

    Arron and Graceforever,

Isn't this a fluff thread? Preacher said have fun. Personally I agree that the spirit of most of thses quotes or mis-quotes are correct. However the point of the thread is to point out where MAN has chanced things.

Dr. Bob...Just what version are you reading? What is the TEV. Would that be The Evil Version?

Graceforever, I agree "spare the rod, spoil the child" isn't be politically correct, but then again who wants to be politically correct anyway.

Something like that. I think it is a legitimate translation (unless you are KJVO) of Isaiah 55:11

"So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty,
              Without accomplishing what I desire,
And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it."

Many people apply it specifically to the Bible (reasoning that the Bible is God's word), but the immediate context of the verse suggests much more. It is in the midst of a majestic portion of Isaiah that invites humankind to repent and come to God. The specific promise given is that, like the spoken words of creation that fashioned the world, God is speaking to us with words of power -- power that will transform us if we repent and will give us assurance for the future. In other words, God's promises are good!

Yes, and much appreciated after toiling through some of the forums, such as the one on Calvinism. [IMG]

Yeah, but after toiling through the Calvinism forum, in particular, it's much appreciated. [IMG] </font>[/QUOTE]I agree! My comment was directed at those who seemed to want to make it something deeper that what it is.

    "Cleanliness is next to Godliness"

Actually the quote I gave is nowhere NEAR Biblical! It is attributed to Benjamin Franklin.

Sorry, guess I took the thoughts more SERIOUS and not FLUFFY enough!

Other English versions have contemporary wording that is shocking to my Victorian morals!

BTW, TEV is "Today's English Version". It first came out as "Good News for Modern Man". It is one of the worst translations I have ever had, but widely accepted in the hippie days of my college experience!

Its "translators" said that they denied the blood atonement, so tried to "translate it out" of their version. Hence one of my problems with it!

The rabbi's had a superstitious belief about washing. It was ceremonial, not hygenic.

Poor hygene is a moral issue and is usually the spawn of sloth and disorder. As God is a god of order, it is a true saying that cleanliness is next to godliness.

[Cumbersome yet necessary disclaimer to silence irrational souls from applying what I said to those who by reason of oppression or affliction are not able to practice good hygene:

I am not here saying that those who by reason of oppression or affliction are dirty and unkempt are immoral.]
