When&Where were Mary&Joseph wed?

Although the scriptures do not state exactly when they were officially married, but it occurred after the birth of Jesus. Read Luke 2:1-6. Also, that Joseph probably waited until after His birth so that others would not think him to be Jesus' father. Read Matt. 13:53-56. Joseph died before Jesus was finished with His ministry, because he is not mentioned after the boy Jesus was left behind in the temple incident.

 

When and where were Mary and Joseph married?

Based on Matthew 1, Joseph was considering the breaking of the espousal relationship with Mary - vs 19 (it could only be broken by divorce). The angel of the Lord told him to marry Mary in vs 20, which he did immediately based upon vs 24. However that marriage was not consumated until after Jesus was born according to vs 25.

As to where, is was most likely in Nazareth where they were both living.

Thus it seems that Mary and Joseph were united in marriage immediately following the dream which Joseph had somewhere in Nazareth. As for a date, it was sometime in 5 BC. previous to December 25th.

Joseph and Mary were engaged before the birth of Jesus, which was as good as being married, without conjugal visits, in those days.

In the genealogical list in Matthew, Joseph was listed as the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus...(Matthew 1:16) The implication is that Mary and Joseph were already married before the birth of Jesus.

After hearing about her virginal birth, Luke mentions Mary as being betrothed to Joseph. So, they were not married at this point. Keep in mind, however, but there is a time line, and not a few months had passed.

When Mary goes up to visit Elisabeth, the infant in Elisabeth's womb jumps for joy at the presence of Mary, and the fruit of her womb. I suggest that Mary and Joseph were at this point married in the eyes of God,,,,,,,for when she leaves, she is going to her own home.....her own home is an indication that Mary is returning to her own home,,,,the home of Mary and Joseph, thus indicating a prior marriage.

These are just my quick thoughts on the matter.

My theory is that as far as the Jews, or civilly, they were married. BUT, since there were no sexual relations prior to Jesus' birth, and in the eyes of GOD they had not yet "become one", they were not considered "spiritually" married.

This is the only conclusion I can come to since they were travelling together for the overnight+ journey they were on!

This is something I had never thought about, growing up hearing this scripture routinely, but I taught a SS lesson on this last Sunday, & I came away with scads of questions that I had never thought of.

 

Mary would not have been allowed to travel alone with Joseph if they were not married. This would not have been tolerated just because they were engaged.

 

But it was being tolerated because of the fact that Mary was still alive after having been "found" with child.

The Bible says "espoused wife' which is akin to betrothal...more serious than engagements are today.

So...yes, they weren't married. Joseph didn't "know" her until after Jesus was born. Again...in the Bible.
