Especially if you have air conditioning at your church. We don't and it was so hot (index at 105) that they moved us downstairs where there was less humidity. The pastor cracked jokes about it being so hot but about a half hour into the service he started stripping (took his tie off ). Interesting. Our normal 1 1/2 hour service got done in just over an hour.

Adam, I just can't tell you how thankful I am for air conditioning. We've had some miserable weather here this summer.

Having lived most of my life in the deep South, I was amazed when I first discovered that there were people with houses/cars that did not have air conditioning. I couldn't imagine life without it.

I understand your plight. Here in Louisiana, the heat will literally kill you, if you have no way of cooling your body. It's not a question here of IF you have it, you are lucky. It's IF you have it you can stay alive. Last year, the heat index in July and August and into September hovered off and on around 110* to 120*.

I had some friends who moved from Louisiana to Indiana. They told me that not everyone had air conditioning in their city. I was shocked. I just thought it was a staple part of every building. Houses, churches, businesses.

But your post reminds me that it is not.

It's hot here right now, I can tell you that!! It's miserable. I try to make it with just my ceiling fans because I can't afford a big electric bill. And I usually do pretty well. But sometimes...well, that air conditioning is coming on for a at least a little while.

I have cats outside and I put a milk jug that is full of frozen water (not milk!) in the shade. The cats lay around it during the worst part of the day. I really think that if I did not do that, that they would die.

I hope that your church finds some way to at least be comfortable. What about window units? Ceiling fans? Hand held paper fans? Don't laugh! You can buy some "old timey" hand held paper fans that will make you hair blow!! And tell that preacher to take that jacket and tie off!!

I have often thought that if I wanted to be a millionaire all I had to do was be an AC repairman in the South.

Of course I'd have to learn how to repair them first!

My air-conditioning doesn't work in either of our cars nor did the one in our house until about 2 weeks ago. We live in the desert of California where when it's 100? we consider it cool.

I thank God for my church that has air-conditioning. When the church started out it did not. Praise God that we can keep our focus on God rather than the sweat rolling down our backs or the possibility of heat stroke.

I just don't remember it being this {{{hot}}} when I was a little girl...of course, I hadn't been spoiled by 'cool-air' yet, either We had "sleeping porches", when it was too hot inside & it was fun watching all the lightning bugs; & the skeeters didn't make ya sick then.

I used to hate it when we would have to travel to Calif. in our old car-going across Tex, Az, etc. was horrible! We'd keep out a cup of ice to rub on our faces. Then when we got to Victorville, they didn't have air-conditioners, just swamp-coolers!

In June, when we went to the Old Paths Camp-meeting, they didn't have air either... I guess I'm just spoiled rotten! (And don't put me in a room & tell me the air is on, yet the thermostat is set on 90` or something~I'd just as soon open the window!)

Someone said they would die without air. Hmmm, wonder how they have so many people in the South? lol What did they do before a/c. We are spoiled rotten in this country. Know what? Keep spoiling me. Even here in the frozen north a/c is nice once in awhile.

A lot of people died… Really. Older people and people with disabilities had their lives shortened by overheating.

We are spoiled rotten in this country. Know what? Keep spoiling me. Even here in the frozen north a/c is nice once in awhile.

I grew up in Southeast Texas along the Gulf of Mexico where the humidity is usually around 90-100% and the temperature is in the mid-90s during the summer. Overheating is a very real problem. What do you do when it is that hot? Not much. The best thing to do is get out of the heat. If you can’t, relax and talk to your neighbors and enjoy a cold drink if you can get it.

When I was pasturing, I lived in a parsonage in West Texas that had no air conditioning (and barely any heating). In the summer the temperatures outside were well into the 100s and inside were just about as bad – except you couldn’t catch a breeze. The church could not afford a swamp cooler or refrigerated air conditioning and I couldn’t either on what they paid me ($35/wk), so I did without for two years. It is very unpleasant to stick to the bed sheets because of perspiration and develop heat rashes all over your body.

I don’t think anyone who lives in North Dakota can really understand what people in the South endure during the Summer months without air conditioning. At least when it’s cold, you can put on cloths to keep warm. In the South during the summers, sometime you wish you could take off your skin to air things out a bit.

Before air conditioning, metro Atlanta had 500,000 people. It now has 4.2 million. I wonder if there is a relationship there?

In case you think this ND country boy has no idea what heat is.

I have lived in the Philippines, Morocco, Thailand, and Viet Nam.

The only place I had a/c was it the Philippines when we rented a car for a short trip.

Notice in my previous post I said SPOIL ME. I do appreciate a/c, I have lived in hot and humid climates without a/c.

BTW Am having problems with the website where my pic is located be back soon so enjoy the respite LOL

We have a/c here in the frozen north and there are days that I use it and appreciate it. No, I am not critizing you folks in the sweltering south, just sayng that there was life before a/c. Miserable as it might have been.

W O W ! Bro.Ernie~You been truckin'! The only spot outside the 48 I've ever been to was Fairbanks, Alaska! Brrrrrrr~I nearly froze to death, but I think my blood thickened up some...I remember it raining all the time when I lived in Washington State, but since that is my favorite kind of weather, I liked it there.

I don't know what everybody is crabbing about the weather in San Diego is 78!... What does it take to please you folks!... Brother Glen~does that son-in-law have anything to do with that gorgeous weather---or does he just have an "inside track" with the One Who does!

My younger brother was born in San Diego in '48 & I had an aunt & uncle(last name Porter)who lived out there for many years. He worked at a Shipyard or something. My husband's daddy was a missionary in the early '60's at Vista.

It's down to 80 degrees here...we had to turn up the heat and pull out the blankets

The best climate I have lived in was Hawaii. We didn't have air there and survived just fine till I got pregnant, but I would have been hot in Alaska then. Right now living in Virgina its hot, and I thank God for air conditioning everyday. I wonder how I survived when I was a kid growing up without air. Heat out west doesn't seem as hot, because of the low humidity, but 100 degrees is hot no matter where you are.

San Diego, ah yes that place by the sea where they always have perfect weather year 'round. Glen you should accompany Doc Cas to South Dakota when he goes to the preachers onference, then you would experience some real weather.

The talk about a/c in church reminds me of this: I was once interim at a church that had no air conditioning but had heat and a tin roof! They reasoned that they didn't need a/c in the church. But they had it in their homes. Interesting how God's house gets the scraps, isn't it?

Anyway, I digress. Spoil me rotten with the a/c. I'm in the Tennessee Valley!

Ernie the only way I am going to any of the Dakotas is kicking and screaming. I'm a native spoiled rotten San Diegan and Doc Cas has the freedom to go where he pleases and Wal-Mart doesn't carry longhandles here. I get cold opening the freezer!... Brother(I'm glad I'm not in the Dakotas)Glen
