Short of the crucifixion of Christ and his subsequent resurrection, what do you think is the one most important event in Baptist History?

Though he may or may not have been a Baptist, that had to be the most important event in Baptist history.

As Baptist is a doctrinal identity and not a denominational name, of course He was a Baptist. If you don't think so, then you think Baptists are doctrinally wrong, and if so, why are you on a Baptist forum? [IMG]

As a Bible-believing, born again, Baptist, it is my opinion that the Creation is a very important event. It alone establishes God as the Creator. If the first four words of Genesis 1 are not true, then all of us, Baptist or otherwise are wasting our time.

The Creation establishes our dependence and accountability on and to a divine Creator.

As a Baptist, a couple of very important events were the establishment of the local, New Testament Church and the giving of the Great Commission.

It is crucial that we be able to trace our heritage and our doctrinal beliefs back to the NT churches. It is also vitally important for us to be fulfilling the Great Commission.
1Cor. 16:15 "I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints,)

AWWWWW! Why can we only pick one!? ;)
Oh well. Besides Jesus's death, burial, and reserection, I guess I would have to say either creation or {I guess we can can chose an event that hasn't happened yet} the rapture!
    I can't wait to see my Saviour, and I know one day, if I live long enough, He will come with a trumpet and a shout to take me and all the saved home! {makes me want to shout just thinking bout it!}
I guess the reason it's so important to me is because we will finaly see face to face the One who died to save us!
    EVEN SO, COME LORD JESUS!

Baptist History is the topic... If you said biblical history I would answer differently but you said Baptist History... The beginning of Baptist History starts here... Luke 1:13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. Matthew 3:1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

4 And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,

6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

John 1:29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me.

31 And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

    35 Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;

36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus... And Baptist all through history have been following him ever since that time!... Brother Glen :D

I think you have it backwards. Baptist IS a denominational name. Denominations differ on how they interpret bible doctrine. If Jesus was a Baptist, then what kind of Baptist?

If someone who belongs to a church that does not call itself Baptist yet has the same beliefs as you, is this person a Baptist whether they want to be or not? Or if someone is a Baptist yet differs with you, are they not really a Baptist?

Here are my top 5 Events

    1.January 21, 1527 Anabaptist Reformation begins
when Conrad Grebel baptizes George Blaurock and then Grebel, Manz and the other group there are baptized. This was the beginning of the return back to the Apostolic model of a Believer's Church.

2.1609 - The birth of the first Baptist Church
that was founded in Holland by John Smyth.

    3. 1611 -The first Baptist Church on English soil
Thomas Helwys lead a small group of Baptists from the Netherlands to England in 1611 and forms the first Baptist Church on English soil.

    4. 1638 - Birth of the Particular Baptist movement
that brings Baptists into the Calvinist sphere of theology.

    5. 1644 - The First London Confession
is the first truly modern Baptist Confession that marries Anabaptist and Calvinist theology and solidifies and articulates Baptist theology in the tradition of the Reformation and away from Arminian theology.

Kiffin: Here's a post I made earlier in the books board, and I think it's applicable here. Some of these are certainly not Baptist events, but they bear upon our beliefs:

But the Landmarkers will like the Waldensian reference, don't you think?

The Act of Toleration in 1689 by William and Mary would probably rank up there as well.

I would also add the Missionary split in the 1830's.

I also would add the Baptist contribution to the Virginia Act of Religous Toleration and the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

I'm surprised that nobody has ranked the birth of the SBC in 1845 as a top Baptist event. I am also surprised my more moderate colleagues(Joshua, David Cooke Jr, RHoneycutt, etc)haven't listed the formation of the CBF as their "defining moment" in Baptist history.

I think the First Amendment is probably our crown achievement, as our value of freedom of conscience has influenced the entire world, and thus our ability to witness.
At this point I don't know if the formation of the CBF is that important of an event. I think what caused the formation of the CBF is definately one of the most tragic events in Baptist history. But I have no idea where this tiny but important "denomination" (quasi-denomination?) is going or what will be its significance. Its to early to tell. At this point, I'm just glad I have a place where I can send my missions money in good conscience. Beyond that, I have no idea what lasting impact this fellowship will leave upon this earth.
You never can tell what will come of such groups. Who would have thought that a group of slaveowners seeking to justify their ownership of other human beings would form the largest witnessing/missionary oraganization in the world? Or that they would (at least for awhile) develop the best seminaries in the world (and in the South!). I do think the devlopment of the SBC for its first 130 years or so is one of the most important events in Baptist history, even though it began as a historical embarassment. Maybe the takeover/resurgence will, in the long run, work to God's glory as well.

    Kiffin,

    Please view www.wayoflife.org/fbns/early.htm
"Early History of the Welsh Baptists" By J. Davis.
Does this information agree with your post or does it disagree?
If this information is concise and true then one of my top 5 would be "Claudia" and her return to Wales.
    Thank You

    Hi Bartimaeus,

Thanks for the link. The ancient Celtic churches like the Waldenses had many things in common with Baptists (at least in holding to Believer's baptism by immersion longer than any other Church or churches). The Celtic churches in Britain however held to a episcopal form of church government, monastic system and by the 8th to 9th century had been forced into conformity with Rome. The Celtic churches might be spiritual cousins or forerunners to Baptists but were not Baptist but held to some baptistic beliefs.
