I am curious as to the opinions people may have on certainly two of the better known financial counselors today: Larry Burkett (Crown Ministries), and Dave Ramsey.

I have listened to Crown Ministries and he seems to have really good advice. I also like that what I have heard from him about giving, he has always that I have heard, strongly advises giving through your local church in order to curb any administrative costs.

Mark me down for hearing only positive things about Larry Burkett. However, I have not heard of (or about) Dave Ramsey.

Dave Ramsey is a financial specialists who writes books and does seminars around the country.

Based on the biblical proverb that the debtor is slave to the lender, he focuses on helping people budget and get out of debt.

I listen fairly regularly and find most of his advice makes sense, though he's harder on debt and perhaps too optimistic about stock mutual funds than I'm comfortable with.

You can check him out at daveramsey.com.

My wife and I have gone through Dave Ramsey's 13 week Financial Peace University. I would recommend it to anyone. He teaches tithing (Malachi 3:10), budgeting (Proverbs 27:23), dumping debt (Proverbs 22:7), and saving an emergency fund (Proverbs 21:20) among other things.

He is very much against credit cards - and rightly so. (Proverbs 22:7) Studies show that people who use plastic (credit cards & debit cards) spend much more than people who use cash. That is why the stores so willingly accept those check cards.

The main teaching is on how to relate to money and have the right attitude. To borrow a quote from Dave: "Personal finance is 80% behavior and 20% knowledge." Did you know that 65% of people who win the lottery end up filing bankruptcy within 10 years?

If I can answer any other questions, please let me know. I feel very strongly about this program. We had the class at my church and a lot of other families have been helped by it as well. [IMG]
