In Independence, MO there are LDS and RLDS visitor centers, because Independence is where they (both) believe Jesus will return. On one huge chart that they have on the wall they show 3 branches coming out of Anabaptist roots, the Baptists, the Mennonites and the Mormons. I'd like to read some comments on that. Also, admittedly sometimes Baptist practices greatly vary and seem strange to some (IE handling snakes). Are there ANY Baptists who, like the Mormons, practice the unbiblical practice of baptism for the dead?

    Mark,

I have read anything about a Mormon / Anabaptist connection. I will do some checking and see what I can come up with. Interesting enough, there is a strong church of church (Campbellite) / Mormon connection, that many people are not aware of. When the Campbellite spilt affected Baptists in the 1830, Alexander Campbell lead large numbers of people out of the Baptist churches. A number of these converts out-campbelled Campbell and actually joined up with Joseph Smith and the Mormons. This is all coming from Memory, but I remember several of the early Mormon leaders had come from the Campbellite movment. An example of this is back in my home county in Kentucky. There is a church there that was Baptists, but joined the Campbellites, and then joined the Mormons. It lasted several years, and then died out.

HMMM, Campbellites being mostly Church of Christ, right? I am not 100%, but the way I understood it was that when the Mormons figured out exactly where Jesus was coming back to, they realized it was on a piece of land owned by the Independence Church of Christ. There used to be a monument there.

    J. R. Graves is right about the strong Church of Christ (Campbellite) connection. Several early Mormon leaders came out of the Campbellite movement. I believe Sidney Rigdon would have been one of the most prominent. One source of confusion though, Mark, is that there is a branch of Mormons that go by the name "Church of Christ". I think they will be the ones who own the piece of land you mention in Independence. They own the "Temple Lots". This group broke with Brigham Young and do not hold such things as plural marriage, baptism for the dead, plurality of gods and celestial marriage. I think one of the leaders was David (can't remember the last name). This David was one who "witnessed" the plates of the Book of Mormon. I believe he also came out of the Campbell movement, but can't put my hands on any info right now that refreshes my memory on this.

Aren't the Campbellites related to the Disciples of Christ?

Church of Christ, Disciples of Christ, Christian Church all are Campbellite at their root. They all come from the "church" started by Alexander Campbell after being expelled from a "baptist" church he and his father Thomas Campbell tried to take over (they never really were baptists). Thomas Campbell came from Scotland where he was an ordained Presbyterian minister who was promenint in the Stone/Campbell movement also known as the Restoration movement. The original idea was to reform the Presbyterian church, but they got kicked out so they tried the baptists, got kicked out and started their own cult, which then fragmented into the three "churches" noted above.

Bro. R. You are correct about Rigdon. And accoding to a Campbellite history I read some time back Rigdon was a Baptist before he became a Campbellite.

This is a very intresting issue and I hope you all can continue with more info. My son is studying W.Martins writings on the Mormon church and I know it will be helpful to him.
    I truly thank you.

Don't blame the Scots for the Campbellites. The son was from northern Ireland.

As is the case with many groups, they use the same vocabulary, but use a different dictionary.

It's not surprising that many Mormons and RLDS sprang from the Baptists. Baptists are very schismatic themselves. (If not schismatic, at least sectarian.) My father was an RLDS proselyte, and I was baptized in 1975.

(No, my views on music have nothing to do with the Church of Christ.)

Anyway, especially today, I find that our own teachers cannot answer the questions that Mormons use in their evangelization, (e.g. Christ's church in the Bible had Apostles. Don't you think that His church today would have Apostles too?)

Why don't we have Apostles today? Chapter and verse, please.

Revelation 21:14 And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and in them the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

The witness is David Whitmer. Not sure his connection with the Church of Jesus Christ (Temple Lots); he seems to pretty much disappear except for his statement about the revelation.

Rigdon is a fascinating character, one of the few folks who can, it seems, claim to have been on the ground floor of the birth of two faiths. Originally Baptist, then (like many Baptists of the time) a Campbellite, then right hand adviser of Joseph Smith, and finally an excommunicate of Brigham Young. The stories he could tell ... but he always, as far as I know, believed in Smith's original vision but rejected later additions, such as polygamy.

To be fair, Alexander Campbell expended a lot of effort — and ink — combatting Mormonism.

The period of the Second Great Awakening and the frontier revivals created a potent stew of all types of beliefs, including Mormonism and the Millerites. Any number of sects arose from those waves of religious revivals, often becoming more and more unorthodox:

Smith was a polygamist, as the sources you linked will verify.

Yes, he was a polygamist, but not at the beginning.
