While surfing the WEB, I found this site:

    http://www.freedomyou.com/addiction/caffeine%20addiction.htm

Every few days the alcohol related thread gets resurrected.

But how about caffeine for the believer?
    Yea or nay?

    What do you think?

I admit, I'm hooked on the java bean and I'm thinking of quitting.

No caffeine for me Hank, the old ticker can't take it. My wife and I drink a lot of spring water, and it is oh so good! [IMG]

Well, Bro. HankD, I gotta have that great big ol'tin cuppa joe every morning just to get me outta bed! That's the best cup of the day and usually, not always, my only cup...

I grind my own beans & always wished I could capture the aroma in a bottle. [IMG] Don't know if that makes me "hooked" or not, but I don't think coffee is a mocker, nor is it immoral, and I don't think anyone has to take away your keys to the family car because of it.

We are commanded to abstain from intoxicating drinks and while I've never taken a sip of liquor, I understand it to be very addicting. :(

It has been said that a Christian has heaven in his eye, Christ in his heart, and the world under his feet...with God in control. [IMG]

    Hi Granny,

Yes, I too grind my own, Hawaii Kona beans.

I began my abstinence from alcohol in Bible School. Now I'm thinking of eliminating caffeine.

More for health than a faith issue, though faith is involved.

I have OFTEN wondered about this subject, so I'll be looking forward to reading what y'all have to say on the subject.

For myself, I love coffee. Only quit for a few days when my stomach gets upset. But the 'high', the 'rush', the 'addiction' part of it is what I'm wondering about. If you're not opposed to it, would pills that keep one awake be alright?

What about soda pop that contains caffeine? My daughter's christian school took all soda pop out of the machines in her school that contain caffeine ... replaced them with juice and bottled water.

I like coffee but drink very little of it.

But ice tea, that's another story. I can drink it by the quart, but I seldom drink it after lunch because (I think) it interferes with sleep. For me, it's not addictive. For other people, I can't say.

Tea and toast in the morning. I'm "addicted" to that combination -- psychologically I think! It tells my brain "morning now. Wake up. Get in gear. There's a day ahead!"

The rest of the day it's water or fruit juices. I was drinking diet cokes occasionally until I found out more about the artificial sweeteners used in them. That did that!

I don't know if it has to do with the caffeine or not, but every once in awhile I get a chocolate craving. It doesn't take much to satisfy it -- a Hershey bar or cup of hot chocolate is fine. What causes that, I don't know.

But tea in the morning? oh yes!

Can caffeine be addictive? Yes, it can, in larger quantities. My oldest son found this out when he tried to quit the morning fancy coffees he would pick up on the way to work. Then he would have more coffee at work, more at lunch...

When he tried to pull back, he found he was nervous and shaky. Made himself go through that and now limits himself to the cup in the morning.

So it's not as addictive as narcotics, or cigarettes, no, where the body cannot do without it, but it is addictive in a milder sense where you do learn to physically accomodate it and have a reaction if it is withdrawn.

Now, take away by toast and tea in the mornings and I would probably be ready for bed by noon! I would be all mixed up at to which end of the day I was at!

I don't drink caffeine at all. I drink caffeine free tea and soda(sugar free too). I do not drink coffee, can't stand the taste. If you need caffeine to get you going in the morning, you are addicted.

I think what I love is the ritual of my dear husband who spoiled me from the get-go by bringing me my eye-opener in bed... [IMG]

I enjoy really sweet tea. It don't matter if it's decaf coffee & tea; either way I love the taste. I love orange juice, kool-aid, colas, etc. & I love Hershey bars too. [IMG]

I'll admit it...yes, I'm addicted to caffeine, no if's, and's or but's to it. I have to have good strong coffee every morning. I don't want any food, whatsoever, until lunch time. The rest of the day I drink water, I used to drink coke but quit, now it's just water.
I've had people start to ride me about my coffee, and I'll ask them what do they drink when they wake up in the mornings. Most will say, a Pepsi, a Dr. Pepper, I just love that...I just smile and say, "well, that's so much better than coffee". :D In my opinion, everyone has an addiction to something...or even several addictions to several different things. Even people that believe they don't, spend some time with them, and I'm sure you will find it. ;) And everyone tries to justify their addictions or compares them to others. That just doesn't fly with me...I know my weaknesses, I've changed some of them, some I still carry and some I will likely carry until the end. I'm human and that's life. [IMG]

It's de-caf all the way for me. I'm a nervous person to begin with, so any caffeine just makes me worse. But, since I love coffee, de-caf is the next best thing.

    God Bless!!!

I just quit drinking coffee about 2 weeks ago. Health reasons for me also. I started running again to lose weight and went on that Zone perfect diet. Ever hear of it? I feel better than I ever did in my life. What a great way to eat. I highly recommend it.

I drink caffeine in the mornings, at least two cups. Use to drink it all day long. Now I drink decaf after lunch. I also love tea.

I may be addicted to it, but nothing operates on me in the same way as coffee, so the caffeine may not be the problem, though I did begin to experience restless nights because of it when reaching 30. Since switching to decaf in the evenings I rest better and feel better.

God Bless you all in your walk and service to Him.

Caffiene is a vace, and consumption of it can be sinful if it controlls you. Trust me, I'm the posterboy of caffiene addiction ;) IT sued to be I couldn't get through the day without a few cup of coffee in the morning, a coke or two around lunchtime, iced tea in the afternoon, and hot tea before bedtime.

Trying to get rid of these things gave me withdrawal migraines.

Today, I still have the occaisional coffee or coke, but I have control over it... it no longer has control over me.

    Now where's my espresso

I don't drink anything with caffeine in it. For health, not moral reasons.
Like alcohol, there's nothing wrong, health-wise, with an occasional drink with caffeine.

An aside: Those who do not drink because it's addicting or intoxicating - even one sip - what's the difference in "having" to have that 1st cup of the day? What is it doing for you? Isn't it changing something physiologically? Isn't that an addiction?

I can't even feed my cat in the morning before suckin' down some coffee.

My pastor does warn us about it, and he's right. I'm just not ready to quit coffee, I get those headaches John V was talking about.

Eight-O-Clock French Roast, whole bean. A touch of half&half.....mmmmmmmmmmmmm

I love my coffee: morning, noon, and night. I grind my own beans, and try to avoid that stuff they call "instant." That ain't coffee. I drink about three to five cups a day. Does it prevent me from sleeping? No, but it helps me to stay awake, if that makes any sense. I just finished my last cup a few minutes ago. I'll post this, then go to bed. I may take in a lot of caffeine, but I don't get headaches. And when I have to do without I don't have withdrawal symptoms either. I drink it because I like it. You can give me that Hawaiian Kona any day.

I grew up in Baton Rouge--went to seminary in New Orleans--both have seaports and river docks. Alongside those docks are coffee warehouses and beaneries. Use to be, if you travel over the Mississippi River bridge from Baton Rouge into Port Allen--if the wind was right--you could catch a "wiff" of the Community Coffee plant!! Have mercy! It'd make you turn around and do it all over again just for the smell! In New Orleans, if the wind was right you could catch an "all day wiff" of the coffee plants there--roasting those beans!!!

When folks find out I'm from BR and points down south in Louisiana and that I drink coffee--they usually ask, "Wow! You must be a Community coffee guy!!??" It usually disappoints them when I say, "Naw! Its Folgers for me!"

    Your friend,
    Blackbird

    Thanks to all.

I agree it has to do with control.

I'm going off coffee for now to see how I feel, then later have an occassional cup.

    blackbird, I lived in N.O. La when I was a teen-ager.

I know that roasting coffee smell!!
