The Cross as Jewelery

A long, long time ago (when I was in high school), I had a teacher that said to me why would anyone want to wear a cross around their neck. After I replied with a look of confusion, he said, no one wears a guillotine around their necks. LOL And no, I was not at that time wearing a cross, nor have I ever owned a cross as jewelry. I have never really thought about it that much I guess, but I think I've always associated necklaces with a cross on them as being Catholic.

I "own" a Cross necklace. My belief is this: The absence of the Cross is the absence of hope in Jesus Christ. I do not believe it is proper to wear a Cross if you don't know what it really stands for. If one wears a cross, and knows what it stands for, but rejects what it stands for, it is wrong. Then there are those who rely on "christian" jewelry to do the witnessing for them: sooo wrong. My favorite "christian" item to make me sick is the "Godweiser" t-shirt. I really doubt the Lord is impressed by that; and, besides, the Bible ITSELF doesn't talk, nor do the jewlery, t-shirts, posters, musical instruments, bumper stickers, or coffee mugs. They are OBJECTS without a life of their own.

I don't see anything UNGODLY about wearing a cross around your neck, IF YOU BELIEVE IN WHAT THE CROSS REPRESENTS, but, if you just walk around and say nothing from your own lips testifying to everyone about how magnificent Jesus is, or what He has done for all of us, then the trinkets are merely eye candy to those who don't know the Lord Jesus Christ and impact nobody.

Of course, if you are a true believer, you already know that the Cross is an offense to the backslidden and the unsaved, so you will OBVIOUSLY get some heat for it. But, did not Jesus himself say that "They shall persecute you for My name's sake"?

With all of this scary talk about newer churches not having an empty Crucifix on the pulpit, it's no wonder why this world is in such a state of decay.

I love what the Cross stands for. It is empty of the body of Jesus Christ, since He conquered sin, but, the vacant cross that remains our Christian symbol is by no means empty of meaning. It serves as a reminder that we have been bought for a price, and that price is our obedience and worship of the ONE TRUE GOD.

That is what the Cross means to me.

 

Guess I'm pretty slow in the brain tonight - I can't imagine why anyone would think that anyone else would worship or idolize a cross on a chain (as a piece of jewelry) rather than worshiping the Lord Himself.

I have a collection of crosses on chains - about two dozen, from wood to nails to pewter to gold to diamonds. I ALWAYS wear one. I don't feel dressed without one. One hangs from the rear-view mirror in each truck, and a stone cross (from Jerusalem Stone) and a porcelain cross are both on living room walls.

For me, it's a constant reminder of what Jesus did for me, like others have said. And as I'm a relatively new Christian (a year and half), my neckwear is noticed by co-workers, none of whom are Christian.

(Once I neglected to put on a cross when getting ready for work. I "crossed" a regular paper clip with a jumbo paper clip and pinned it to my T-shirt. )
