    On December 11, 2001 the Evangelical Christian-Baptist churchs of Brest and Rogozno sent a petition to the President of Belarus. The petition requested the halt to the persecution of two Believers, Rashid A. Gulyaev and Nikolai A. Zhuk. The petition also before the President the fears of the Rogozno Believers over the possible confiscation of their Дом Молитвы (Prayer House/Church Meetinghouse).

    The President, Alexander Lukashenko, did not see the petition. The President's Office sent the petition down to the authorities in Brest and Rogozno. The local authorities are trying to pressure these Believers into registering their churchs. The Believers have resisted these attempts to control them and their message. The local newspaper in an article titled Law will put Everything in Order branded the Brest and Rogozno pastors as outlaws for their resistance. Under Belarus' constitution and legal code, there is no requirement for church's to be registered with the State.

    Don't think that the actions of these Brothers and their churchs are anything new. The rejection of government registration has been an article of faith since 1962 of the underground church, the инициативники and independent churches.

    Is Belarus a fundamentally Islamic country in the strain of Pakistan or Saudi Arabia (or neither)?

    Neither of these countries, to my knowledge, were as tight as the Taiban-Afghanistan even though the atmosphere made you apprehensive to tell others you were a Christian.

    Not really, it is though a typical reaction of countries formerly under Russian goverence. The czars and commissars both wanted to control the thinking of their people.

    Bro. Keith, it would be helpful if you could give a sample letter format. For I believe it is important to use key words, which will trigger response from the proper authorities in this case. Also, I would like to know if letters written in English will have a positive effect or will it be just discarded to the wayside - since it is not written in their local language? Please advise.     Just letting the local powers that be that these Brethren are not forgotten, is enough. These would-be Stalinists like to think that nobody is watching them.
