Genesis 7

    Forgive me if this has been discussed before.

    KJV
    Genesis 7:1 "And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation."

    NIV
    Genesis 7;1 "The LORD then said to Noah, "Go into the ark, you and your whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation."

    To me, the word "come" in the KJV means God is inviting Noah to join him in the ark. The word "go" in the NIV suggests to me that God is sending Noah in alone. Personally, I like the KJV's warm invitation, to join God in the ark.

    Going thru the different versions, I saw just about a 50/50 split between the ones that use "go" & the ones that say "come".

    Any thoughts ?

    I hope you would agree that we do not choose a wording because its what we like but rather because it is most accurate? ;)

    The NASB says "Then the Lord said to Noah, “Enter the ark, you and all your household, for you alone I have seen to be righteous before Me in this time." The ESV says "Then the Lord said to Noah, "Go into the ark, you and all your household, for I have seen that you are righteous before me in this generation."

    The word translated "enter" in the NASB and "come" in the KJV/NKJV is the Heb word bo (97c); a prim. root; meaning to come in, come, go in, go.

    It seems that in context, "come" and "go" are both legitimate translations.

    I agree with Chris. Bo' means to come or go, and in the context it can be either. Your point (that God was calling him to himself in the ark) does not seem to be the point of the text. It seems rather a simple call to get from one place to another. That is probably all we should read into it.
