It would depend on what you mean by the term "American Baptist." Do you mean Americans who are Baptists or individuals who are members of Baptist churches affiliated with the ABC-USA?

    I'm both.

I was raised in an American baptist churc. Never remember anyone telling me about salvation, got married in an American Baptist church, pastor never mentioned salvation, never met him until we decided to get married, after we were married we attended the local American Baotist church when we fiiled out the vistors card we requested the pastor to visit....received a box of offering envelopes with our name and address. Never did receive a pastoral visit. By the way thes were three separate churches.

Attended an IFB church, attempted to join the church...pastor took me to his study and opened the Bible and proceeded to explain the plan of salvation. Now can anyone figure out why I now attend an IFB church?

Ernie - This is a sad-but-true analysis of many of the ABC churches. As an organization, their schools are liberal, and many of their churches no longer give the "old time Gospel" message.

I grew up in Minneapolis (just a few ABC churches around) and am GLAD that our brother in Apple Valley - a suburb - has found a good ABC church. I never knew of any in all my years growing up, college and seminary in that area.

Most of the strong churches withdrew from the ABC over liberalism back in the 30's - 50's, and went toward Conservative Baptists or totally independent.

But I rejoice for every ABC church that still preaches the Word!

In my not entirely unbiased opinion good American Baptist is an oxymoron. Due to affiliation with the ABCUSA, every American Baptist church is a defacto member of the apostate NCC and WCC. :(

Oddly enough the pastor that led me to the Lord left the ABC convention. He was pastoring a IFB on the mission field when I met him.

Well, thank you all for convincing me what I already knew from most of what I read here. There are a lot of Baptists on this board, but not very many of them know Jesus. The statements in this thread are proof of that.

ellis, your post is a classic example of Phariseeism. You consign anyone to hell who does not agree with you. To those who have the courage and spiritual insight to form their own convictions you say, "not very many of them know Jesus." Shame on you. The Lord rebuke you!

I am sure they have a vision of a return to something more "conservative", but am not sure how they would define their historic Baptist roots. They have a website you could check out.

It is not a sign of courage or conviction for people to blast the beliefs of other Christians with whom they disagree, i.e. in the previous posts on this thread where you yourself have done what you have rebuked me for doing. You hypocrite! Get the log out of your own eye before you try to clear the speck out of someone elses. How dare you stand there and condemn me when you have done exactly that just a few posts above mine! And have consistently done it all through these threads and topics.

There is a whole world out there needing to see Christ, but there's a whole group of Baptists on this board who would rather name call, make accusations and waste time arguing over which Baptist is the best kind, who's closest to the truth and whether or not the KJV is the preserved word of God.

Generally, this board just becomes a rehash of the same old stuff with the same old posts. The claimed box score is over 2200 members but 90 percent of the posts come from about seven people, most of whom are moderators of the board. It is easy to see why so many have just simply quit. It is a waste of time. I thought I could learn a few things and have some good discussions and get some good information, but that has been the exception rather than the rule.

I go to an AMERICAN BAPTIST (ABC-USA) church that is absolutely committed to giving a witness of Christ to a lost and dying world. We partner with thousands of other churches and more than 1.9 million other Baptists directly in carrying out the great commission and living out the gospel in our churches and communities. You can label us any way you want, it really isn't going to make us any difference. Nor will it stop us.

It doesn't take courage and conviction to criticize other believers. Mostly, it takes cowardice, self-righteousness and insecurity.

ellis, please do not lie about what I have posted. My posts are there for anyone to read. I have never questioned your salvation because of the church you attend or the doctrine you hold. It was you who consigned me and others who disagree with you to hell as not knowing Jesus. Shame on you for lying, the Lord rebuke you!

Didn't "ANY" of these church give an "invitation" at the end of services???

The "whole program" of my church is "geared" toward "inviting Sinners" to salvation, we "NEVER" close a service without an invitation.

ellis, you are not a martyr and neither do you accurately represent fundamentalists. You are off base by using some fringe fundies (KJV-only, Baptistbriders, etc) as the rule. Are you not aware that Jesus Himself prayed in John 17 that the unity of believers would be essential for the world to know that He was sent by the Father? If you think unity is based on the fact that people say Jesus, you are seriously mistaken.
