2 Sabbaths on Paschal week

    Mark 16:1 says when the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, bought spices that they might come and anoint Him.

    However, in Luke 23:56, the women returned and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the Sabbath day, according to the commandment.

    How could these women buy the spices and ointments after the Sabbath, and yet have them prepared before the Sabbath? That's impossible, unless there were two Sabbaths that week --- the annual Nisan 15 Sabbath, which ushers in the first Day of Unleavened bread (Lev.23:7) and the weekly Saturday Sabbath.

    If Jesus died late on Nisan 14(wed.), the next day was a 'high Sabbath'-- Nisan 15(thurs.). Next day --Nisan 16(fri.) the women buy and prepare their burial spices, for this is the first opportunity they have. Next day, Nisan 17(sat.) they rest according to the scripture. Next day, Nisan 18(sun.) they go to the tomb of Jesus very early to anoint His body --- but He is gone. He rose from the dead late Saturday, exactly 3 days and 3 nights -- 72 hours -- like He said.

    Is there any truth to this article, thanks!

    Abiyah has said before that Sabbath is not relegated to one specific day per week only. Multiple Sabbaths in a week pop up occaisiolayy on the annual Jewish calendar.

    Not necessery for westerners to keep track of, but important for us to understand.

    Just read Leviticus 23 and the light bulb may come on. These holidays, which the New American Standard Bible calls "the appointed times" of the Lord, are more Christian than Jewish. They are also ANNUAL SABBATHS. One of them occurred the day after Jesus died.

    The Passover, for example, portrays the sacrifice of Christ. The days of Unleavened Bread remind us to put sin out of our lives. Pentecost pictures the receiving of the Holy Spirit. Trumpets looks forward to the return of Christ and the resurrection. Atonement represents the binding of Satan and the whole world being "at one" with God. The Feast of Tabernacles look forward to the millennium, and the eighth day pictures the "Great White Throne" judgment.

    I thank my God when people begin to see the
    truth of Scripture and begin to put together
    what some churches have both refused to
    acknowledge and to study, because it is
    easier to go along with the Christian tradi-
    tions handed down through the R.Catholic
    church.

    But I beg of you: please do not say that these
    holy days are more Christian than Jewish!

    Christianity has not only deliberately and defin-
    itely severed its ties with Jews, but it has also
    cut off Jews from our Lord, until recent years,
    when some very few Christians are finally reach-
    ing out to them. Not only that, but much of the
    Church remains in chosen ignorance regarding
    certain biblical issues and texts, because they
    refuse to seek out what Jews know that they
    merely guess and surmise.

    Believe me, some Christians are coming around!
    But not many. And some who attempt to evangel-
    ize Jews will tell them that the holy days are the
    celebrations of cults, demanding that Jews stop
    calling our God by the name they are used to and
    that they take up such Christian activities as
    Easter and Christmas.

    I thank my God that the pastors of my syna-
    gogue, Jews of course, recognized that while
    they were reared Baptist, there was a real need
    for a place for Jewish believers in our Lord to go!

    I would only note that there is no double sabbath issue mentioned in any one gospel. Did God not get it right with Mark and needed Luke? Come on! It is more logical to say that the gospels are passing on different traditions about the same event.

    Daniel Dunivan -- John does call the Sabbath following Jesus' death a "high day", indicating something different than a saturday Sabbath.

    The yearly holidays of the Bible are also called Sabbaths (Lev. 23:32, The Day of Atonement, for example). Perhaps John is alluding to one of these.
