Smokin, Dippin & Chewin! Are they Wrong?

Dippin and chewin?
Well I'm not on eof the boys, and I don't know what people are going to think about them being sinful, but in my opinion their about the nastiest thing you can do. And they stink too. Can yopu imagine looking at someones smile who chews, that nasty color on their lip from spitting. And the worst thing is having to kiss them, oh yuck. Living in tobacco country I've seen a few men with no cheek, or throat from the cancer too.
My mother in law is in her 70's and she's chewed mamoth cave twist(that aint no sissy pouch stuff, it's not much more then straight off the stalk) for over 60 years.

 

My view is anything that smell bad is sinful. My kids have confirmed that with their attitude towards me when I return home from the gym.

 

I quit smoking 35 years ago... Cold Turkey!... Dippin and Chewin... nasty habit where do I go to hurl... Yeeaaaccchhh!... Not sinful but sure are nasty! Could someone show me a cigarette in the Bible?... Brother Glen

There are lots of camels in the Bible.

I guess Spurgeon proved you can smoke cigars and remain faithful in preaching the word, and be respected down through the ages. So I learned.

On cancer from tobacco...I have heard doctors say it is all the chemicals used in growing and preparing the tobacco rather than the tobacco itself. I don't know. It doesn't really bother me......speaking of camels.....have you ever seen them spit???? Maybe that's where chewing comes from.

May I inject gum into this?

Since tobacco can't be grown without the chemicals I don't see it makes a difference when it comes to cancer.

 

I don't smoke, I don't dip, and I don't chew.

And I certainly don't go out with girls who do!

I don't see that they are sins either, except perhaps when done to excess.

I'll be the odd girl out on this one, too. I roll my own (tobacco, thank you very much) cigarettes, and enjoy one or two in a day (sometimes four or five if I'm out). I enjoy the taste of finer tobaccos, just as I like the taste of a single malt scotch. In fact, they're two great tastes that taste great together (Oy vez).

(side note, I'm more than aware of some people's thoughts on even one or two cigarettes a day, so I've heard it all. If someone wants to comment, please let it be on the sinfulness (or lack thereof) rather than on how I'm "killing myself slowly." I don't want this to turn into that kind of thread. Thanks. )

 

Congratulations, Bro.Glen, on giving-up your smokes! And cold turkey, at that!

I have prayed for my husband all these many years to quit, but he's so hooked... It has caused many folks to stumble, especially in his capacity as deacon.

His daddy was a pastor(& smoked), having died from complications of emphysema. His mother just recently passed away & smoked all her life too.

I am thankful that none of our children took-up the habit. PTL! [They knew I'd beat them to death-haha!]

 

Actually, I recall reading somewhere that one of Spurgeon's servants confronted him on the issue of smoking. CHS told him that his wasn't a habit while the servant's smoking was. CHS challenged the servant to quit smoking for 2 weeks while he (CHS) would do the same. Thus, CHS would prove that his wasn't a habit. Within a few days, the servant had others in the household begging CHS to let him loose from his 2 week obligation, while CHS happily went his way with no problem.
Maybe someone else could verify this.

Meanwhile, I am opposed to this filthy habit but do find scripture to reinforce those who want to continue. "He that is filthy, let him be filthy still."

Well, my dad dips...and I can tell you that it's really gross to sit down in a chair and have this nasty odor waft towards you...or to pick up what you think is a "half drunken coke" and go to pour it out and it's chewed up skoal. (no little green faced sick thingy to use here)
I remember once when my dad sent me to buy his skoal for him...I prayed the whole time that no one I knew would see me.

 

Your body is a temple. This stuff, like many things put in or on our bodies are harmful.
Whether they're sinful or not shouldn't even enter the picture.

OK, OK, I don't believe they're sinful, but...

A little boy was talking to his Daddy who was a preacher about the nasty, foul, filthy habit of smoking.
Daddy will smoking cigarettes send you to HELL!
The Dad look his son straight in the eye and said... NO!... But it will sure make you smell like you had been there!

I think nicotine addiction is one of the more serious substance abuse problems, not necessarily for its effect on society, but because of the low success rate among those who try to give it up. It ranks right up there with crack and meth when it comes to the relapse rate.

So, my opinion is that anything which is that addictive is wrong for a Christian to use.

 

It would seem that most people who responded are in agreement about the filthiness of smoking, dipping, and chewing of tobacco.

2 Corinthians 6:16-18,
"And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said: I will dwell in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they shall be My people. Therefore, come out from among them and be separate says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you. I will be a Father to you, and you shall be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."

I feel that God's word is pretty clear about this topic, but it's hard to break the habit without the Lord's help.

 

I played a lot of baseball in the 70's and though I did'nt take up chewing I knew a lot of guys that did. The surprise was that chewing for some was just as addictive as smoking was for others. I quit smoking 18 months ago after 25 years of the habit and can attest to the incredible hold nicotine can have over you. Is either one a sin? I dont know. But with the info available today on smokeless tobacco that was'nt available years ago, if a kid I was coaching started chewing, I would'nt be quick to call him a sinner but would be quick to call him stupid. (And off the team).
