Since the SBC will end it's relationship with the District of Columbia Baptist Convention in one year, does anyone know if there are plans to start another convention in the D.C. area? I know that there two Baptist conventions in Virginia, but do either of them do work specific to the D.C. area? I am not saying there has to be a SBC in D.C., other baptist groups are there already, it just seems like with all the people living there, they could use all the help they could get. BTW, do you think it is a good idea for the SBC to pull out of the D.C. Convention? And who should get the $500,000 that they where sending to the D.C. Convention?

In a nutshell the DC Association refused to be bullied and controlled by the SBC. So SBC took their ball and went home.

Couldn't the more conservative churches in the area affiliate with the SBCV(the break-away convention SBC conservatives in Virginia started in 1996)?

You're assuming there are more conservative churches.

I've only attended church once in DC, but the church seemed quite social and not at all conservative (calling it moderate would have stretch). I wasn't aware that the SBC putting $500,000 into DC. But it makes sense that the churches should be just like the rest of the city, take take take from the rest of the nation with very little giving and have no doubt that they are entitled to be supported.

Mark, the DC baptist churches I'm aware of are idneed very liberal but they are also very involved in their communities with tremendous social programs dealing with homelessness, poverty, public health, substance abuse, etc. I think perhaps you are over-generalizing.

I know of one very strong, conservative SBC church in DC, Capitol Hill Baptist pastored by Mark Dever. Im sure there are others as well.

Joshua, There is NO DOUBT I am over generalizing. I visited only one church there, so I am wrong to paint all of them with the same brush. My sincere apologies....

When I made that comment, I believe at one time the DCBC consisted of churches not physically in the District of Columbia. And I assumed that there would be at least one church in DC that jives with what's been going on in the SBC all these years.

I'm sorry my post was so abrupt. :(

What I should have said is "Are there that many more conservative churches in the convention?"

You're quite right that the association includes churches outside D.C. -- from Maryland and Virginia.
