I could give you plenty of Biblical examples of why you shouldn't.
Out of curiosity - why do you?
And does it ever affect your witness in any way? Would tattoos affect your witness in any way?

I've had my left ear pierced for going on 20 years now, and I still wear an earing (usually a small dove) on occasion. If anything, I think it's probably helped my witness as clergyperson since it's an indicator that I'm not hung up on the non-essentials of the faith.

I ran across and OT example of God describing Isreal as a woman, a beautiful woman I think and it says in a positive sense that she had a ring in her nose. Made me really think about it deeper(sorry I can't think of the verses off hand) Also, my son went to AWANA camp the summer before last and his leader for the week had earings a tongue ring and a belly botton ring. It bothered me when i saw him but once I talked to him he was very nice. I asked him about the piercings and he said that he does think much about it. He spends mnch of his time ministering to people in inner city chicago and says it gives him an "in" with the people. Maybe he is trying to be all things to all people to try to win them to the Lord. As for my kids, they will not be permitted any piercings except for my girls ears.

As humans we all get caught up with outer appearance first. Here's one way to think about it...I try to remember the way the bible describes John the Baptist...

Do you think if someone came to your Church dressed like John the Baptist as described in the bible...would you accept him or avoid him?

I don't have much of a problem with it, but I tend to like to stare and ask questions to the ones who have peircings in odd places.

Tattoos find origins in slave markings of ownership. Some cultures tattooed by "scaring" - simply cutting the body in patterns and when they heal, they are different than the skin color and texture.

Piercing the ears, nose, lips, et al, also arose in ancient practices of Africa and the Middle East.

I went round-and-round with my teen daughter about getting her ears pierced. We checked every scripture that might conceivably deal with it. I had been raised that only harlots and blacks had pierced ears; good white women did not. (Not defending that, just showing how I was raised in a big northern city). I would never have even considered dating a girl with pierced ears in the early 60's.

Found out that my early prejudicial training acclimated my thinking but was NOT based on the Bible. So I acquiesced and allowed my daughter to get her ears pierced (at 16).

What am I concluding? The Bible is silent on a lot of the silly things we make a bug fuss over. If you want to look like Denis (or is it Denise?) Rodman, that is your call.

Don't expect me to like it. Move over, Archie Bunker, that's my lazy-boy.

If you start calling me "Meathead" it's going to put a strain on our friendship.

Used to have long hair and an earring. Got rid of them both.

Never had a tattoo. I know if I got one, I'd change my mind two weeks later and be stuck with it.

God warns of such things in the OT book of Deut.I would be very careful of violating one of God's commands.

It's a personal issue. If you are convicted then don't wear them, if not and it doesn't cause stress in your life then go for it...your salvation doesn't stand on your jewerly or tatoos but on Jesus Christ alone and he's much bigger than any of that stuff.

Just out of curiosity (and don't read anything into this statement; I'm asking out of curiosity only, and have no comments on this subject): What would you say to someone that said, "if that's what a Christian looks like, I don't want any part of it"?

Don, I hear what you are saying. Which makes me ask, "What does a real Christian look like?" Are we all like factory houses that all look alike in certain regions or like houses in a subdivision?

Clergyperson???? I wonder what THAT is suppose to mean. I hope it is not meant as some type of feminist, politically correct blabble-type term!!!
I never understood why all these beautiful young people want to go out of their way to set off the metal detectors when they walk by. All these rings in the nose, lips, and no-telling where else, is just a trendy, conforming, do as the "rebellious" crowd is doing-type of sheepish behavior. Why a person wants to make a effort to take a beautiful, young body and make it look ugly is beyond me. The only thing I can think of, is it is for shock value to show a spirit of rebellion. Of course, the only thing it proves is that a person is still so immature that he/she should not be out after dark without their mommy.

Clergyperson - a person who is a member of the clergy. I don't understand why the word causes you difficulty. Would you have prefered I said "minister?"

    Rev. Villines:
Yes. I think the term "clergyperson" is just another long line of terms that subvert the language and go along to get along with the feminists and politically correct crowds--groups that are not among my favorites.
