Seventh Day Baptists

    I am involved in a small group known as the Seventh Day Baptist church. Member of the Baptist World Alliance. I grew up in the Salvation Army and am very much used to the idea of the Sunday worship. Seventh Day Baptists dont suggest that Seventh Day meetings are connected to Salvation in any way, and are more than happy to be a part of the body of Christ along with the Sunday Church.

    I feel that the idea of having church on a Saturday is a good one when we consider that the early church met on the Jewish Sabbath for teaching. The pope in the third century made the church officially change from Saturday to Sunday in order to accomodate the Sun Worshippers into the new State organised religion. This was one of the worst ever things to happen to Christianity due to complacency setting in.

    The Catholic church today proudly state that they changed the Sabbath because the Pope is the head of the christian church and had the right to take this descion. I dont recognise the pope or his edicts. I dont think the christian church should do as he says on the basis that he is Gods only oracle. Should more fellowships within the christian church be looking at going back to a sabbath meeting? Not out of Law, but out of a desire to be more like the early church?

    Hey Ben, while I personally don't have a problem with those who observe the Sabbath on Sunday, I applaud you for your specific interpretation of scripture. If Christians all began worshipping on a Saturday, I would have no problem with it. After all, it is a commandment, not a suggestion.

    Unfortunately, there's a bigger issue here, and I've seen this in my own pews. Going to church alone does not constitute keeping the Sabbath Day holy. If you look at the Jewish people, they attend temple on Saturday (or Friday after sundown), and continue to keep the sacredness of Saturday by resting until sundown: no chores, no housework, no mowing the lawn, no laundry, etc. Yet we contemporary Baptists have this idea that either the 4th commandment is no longer valid, or that attending worship services is all we need to do to keep it Holy.

    What do you think?

    Colossians 2:16-17 -- Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day-- things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ.

    Romans 14:5 -- One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind.

    I don't think Romans 14:5 refers to the 4th commandment of keeping the Sabbath day, but to how sacred the days of the week are considered by people.

    Colossians 2:16-17 does not speak to whether or not we should observe the Sabbath, only that one should not be judged by men about it.

    I have no problem with Sunday keeping Christians Whatsoever. I am more than happy to go to a meeting on a Sunday. Some Saturday groups make judgements of Sunday keepers and vice versa, both are wrong to do this as is outlined in Scripture above.

    John V You have hit the nail on the head concerning keeping the Sabbath Holy. Church attendance is a small part of the Sabbath. I know of many who choose to go to sports, do work etc on their nominated Sabbath. That is their choice. I think its important to keep the 10 commandments today. This should include making an attempt to keep the Sabbath Holy. Imagine what could happen in our communities if Christians really did keep the Sabbath Holy. Even if we simply put time aside to fellowship with those new to our churches or to join in with a bible study between families.

    The main reason I advocate Saturday Church is that I feel it is neccesary for people to get back into what the early church was about. I see the modern church as letting down the original vision of the early church, Prosperity Gospel, Luke warm preaching, Acceptance of things the bible says are wrong are all to common. Lets get back into community based church minus the Capatalism and I reckon we could really see revival.
