    Hebrews 10:28,29 (ESV)
Anyone who has set aside the law of Moses dies without mercy on the evidence of two or three witnesses. How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has spurned the Son of God, and has profaned the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has outraged the Spirit of grace?

In John Macarthur's Bible study series he has this commentary on the statement "How much worse punishment;" "There will be degrees of punishment in hell. This is also clearly indicated in Matthew 11:22-24." Is this the 'typical' baptistic thought on hell? Are there levels, degrees of heat, etc in hell? Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Lu 12:4 And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do.

5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

Death under Moses/law was only the death of the "Body", however the "Soul" dies over and over and never stops.

Mr 9:44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched.

Re 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

Heaven is one "long day", no Night, however hell has a "day and night", which "marks" the passing of time making the torment worse, knowing "tomorrow" is going to be a "repeat" of "today". (Hopelessness)

Their life was "worthless" to God, now their life become "worthless" to them, they would prefer "Death" rather than continuing to "live/exit", but the "soul" will live as long as God lives.

It can't get any worse that that???

John Gill wrote this about Matthew 23:14 "therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation; both on account of their plundering and distressing the poor, the widows, and the fatherless; and also because of their hypocrisy in doing this under the cover of religion and holiness. Hence it appears, that there are degrees of punishment in hell, and that hypocrites, and all such who oppress the poor, under the mask of godliness, supposing gain to be that, will be partakers of the greatest degree of it.

So from at least one early baptist it appears there existed a belief in levels of punishment in hell.

I am trying to reconcile this in my head though and may run round and round with it for a while.

    More input is greatly appreciated.

A sinner with God is still a sinner, without respect of persons or their sin.

God only "Chastises" with "Stripes" those who are saved and according to their "error".

But either way, Heaven is still heaven, Hell is still hell.

From what I understand, the view of the church has always been that there are varying degrees of punishment in hell as well as varying degrees of bliss in heaven.

Dante' took this (along with a lot of Greek mythology) and wrote his famous Inferno, from which we get a lot of our modern depictions of hell.

The Apocalypse According to Peter describes in graphic detail the punishments in hell for various types of sin.

Separation from God is just that: separation. God is not going to allow a devil or demon to torment anyone. They have their due. In Hell, one is utterly alone. No one remembers you, no one is concerned about you, not even God. You are conscious, up to your waste in cement, struggling to free yourself. You need to go to the bathroom. It is pitch black. Forever. Degrees of punishment? Get real.

Right, the torment of hell isn't going to be the "flames", but the "Hopelessness" of their situation.

A hopelessness leading into "depression" so deep that it can never be experienced in this world because the "hope" of putting a gun to their head to end it still exit, but in hell, even that options isn't available.

The "WILL" to live is "TOTALLY" taken away.

I'm not sure anyone said anything about the devil or the demons tormenting anyone. The devil, the demons, and the lost are all tormented.

Matthew 8:28-29 When He had come to the other side, to the country of the Gergesenes, there met Him two demon-possessed men, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that no one could pass that way. 29 And suddenly they cried out, saying, "What have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?"

Luke 16:22-28 So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 "And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. 24 "Then he cried and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.' 25 "But Abraham said, 'Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented. 26 'And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.' 27 "Then he said, 'I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father's house, 28 'for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.'

Revelation 14:9-11 Then a third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, "If anyone worships the beast and his image, and receives his mark on his forehead or on his hand, 10 "he himself shall also drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out full strength into the cup of His indignation. He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels and in the presence of the Lamb. 11 "And the smoke of their torment ascends forever and ever; and they have no rest day or night, who worship the beast and his image, and whoever receives the mark of his name."

Matthew 8:11-12 And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 "But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."

NOTE: Sons of the Kingdom in this context refers to unbelieving Israel, not true believers.

Matthew 22:13 Then the king said to the servants, 'Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.'

Matthew 24:50-51 the master of that servant will come on a day when he is not looking for him and at an hour that he is not aware of, 51 "and will cut him in two and appoint him his portion with the hypocrites. There shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Revelation 20:10-15 The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever. 11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

All of these passages are very descriptive of some kind of torment for eternity. It is more than just separation and loneliness. It is eternal judgment at the hand of God.
