Hello all. I kind of am still a Star Wars fan, but not by much. I've read the books after Return of the Jedi and they stink. My question is....should the Christian watch Star Wars? Is it evil??

    No, it's not evil, Jesse.

But I haven' watched Star Wars since the original three, not because I think they're evil, but because I see no reason.

I will have to agree with rsr, why would star wars be evil? Is everything that isn't thematically Christian evil?

If there's teachings on space aliens and **** like that, yes it is evil and against the Word of God.
Ask the Mormons, the Church of Scientology and other cults on the fact that they believe in space aliens.
Do you believe that God Who is TRUTH wants you to be entertained by lies??
It is fantasy, and entertainment to some, but to others it is a doubt on the Sacred Word of God.
Demons like to play "dead spirits" and "aliens"
    to spiritually attack us.
Don't be fooled by the father of lies and his traps.

    JValen,

Is this your own personal interpertation, or do you have some other evidence to share?

For instance, if we follow your logic, then I could rightly deduce the following:

    1) Cheesecake does not directly lift up the Lord Jesus Christ.
    2) Anything that does not directly lift up the Lord Jesus Christ is contrary to God's Word.
    3) Anything that is contrary to God's Word is evil.
    4) Cheesecake is evil.

Well, I know some Christians that will rightly tell you cheese cake had better not be evil or there in a bit of trouble. ;)

But the point is you have given nothing more than an opinion and faulty logic, unless of course you would like to offer more.

I believe Star Wars in and of itself is harmless. As you pointed out it is fantasy. If we understand that it is fantasy and reality is that we have faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, then we can use movies such as the star wars series for good purposes....such as:

    1) Family game/movie night. Discuss the movie with your family, its principals and philosophy as compared to what we believe.
    2) Youth Group outing. If you have a couple of theologically astute youth who love to argue, this could serve as a great movie.
    3) It can be used as an oppertunity to witness to an unsaved friend your spending time with. ("Well, this is what star wars themes are- we know that they are fantasy- but is there any supernatural force or divinity that is real?")

It all depends on how you look at it. You can write star wars off as evil, as you can many, many other movies, or you can open your mind a little more and see other possibilities.

    In Christ,
    Brother Adam

I do not think that star wars is evil. I have been told that it contains a lot of buddhist ideals and beliefs, but i don't have anything to back that up, just something to consider, maybe find something to prove or disprove it.

While i agree that star wars and other movies and works of fiction are only entertainment, and should be taken for just that, there are a few things about star wars: episode 1 that bothers me.

Anakin skywalker is born to a virgin and concieved through the 'force'.

His birth was supposed to have been prophisised.

He is supposed to bring balance to the force.

We know from the first three movies that he turns out to be evil.

Just some things to think about.

    SACRILEGE! SACRILEGE, I say!

Thou shalt have thy place in the fires of hell for even conceiving of such a notion!....

    Hi ATeengeChristian,

No, Star Wars(which is my favorite movie [IMG] ) is not evil as long as you do not let your interest in it interfere with your adherence to Jesus' teachings.

If you find yourself preferring to watch Star Wars at the expense of bible studying, praying, and praising God, then you show that you love Star Wars too much. If you love this worldly creation like this then the love of God is not in you (1 John 2:15).

    Have A Great Blessed Day!

It is FICTION (science fiction, actually) and as such is not "Christian" and may contain actions, attitudes and underlying philosophies that are not "Christian".

    Does that make it "evil"?

    Louis L'Amour does the same . . .

Hey, I watched "A Wonderful Life" a few months back and that dealt with spirits, angels, force . .

Well, the argument could go on - YOU select the "fiction" and we can see the same.

The only real problem I see with it,is that it shows that good and bad come from the same source...which could be confusing to younger ones.

I agree,it is a non-christian fictional movie for entertainment,so we should not expect it to teach biblical truths....My children have not seen it,but that's just because we don't see a lot of movies, only *really* good ones, and this is not one we have chosen. But all in all,I don't see a huge problem with sci fi as long as the ones watching it do understand the fantasy about it. I would be careful with the idea that both good and bad come from the same source....make sure any children that do watch this are taught the error of that concept.

[Star Wars] contains a lot of buddhist ideals and beliefs, but i don't have anything to back that up, just something to consider, maybe find something to prove or disprove it.

There are a lot of things in other religions that are not necesserily anti-christian, and there are concepts in other religions that are found in Christianity, so I'm usually not too concerned unless a belief is specifically ungodly. The concept of Karma and "what you do to others comes back to you" is by no means a buddhist-only concept.

I'm also not sure why some people feel that anything involving space aliens has an evil connotation. With that mentality, all scifi is evil. Hey, if a talking tomato named Bob isn't evil, then neither is a Jedi teacher named Yoda, or a Klingon warrior named WOrf.

The great thing about Lucas' SW adventures is the good guys wear proverbial white hats and the bad guys wear black hats. Even when the bad guys win, you know they get their come-uppence before too long.

AMEN John. "My name is Bob. I'm a tomato and I'm here to help" sure sounds like something Jesus said . . .

Thank you all for replying. I could not tell the difference between fact and fiction when Star Wars was my only hobby. SW does have Buddhist theologies in it. Episode I- TPM really disturbed me. Only one thing troubled me.

    1.) A virgin birth???? WHAT?!?!?!?!?!

Ok I know Anakin's birth was prophesized, but he had to have a Father. There is no God in the SW universe and he cannot just magically (I use that word wisely.) appear in Shmi's womb. Its a physical impossibility.

"there are a few things about star wars: episode 1 that bothers me."

There alot of things that bother me about Episode 1 and most of them are centered around the fact the its just a really bad film (compared to the originals). The whole virgin thing was ridiculous.

I dont find it evil but you can make anything evil in your life. For example, people known as "trekies" who dress up and idolize characters from Star Trek. Sart Trek in its self is fine but because these people have made it a form of idolitry in their lives they have taken what is not bad and made it bad. So you can take anything and make it a sin in your life but this dosent make it a sin for someone who just watches it to be entertained.

As to the notion of the "virgin birth", I didn't see anything that suggested that Anakins' mother was a virgin. However, it is my understanding from the movie, (yes I did waste several hours of my life I can never get back), that he was concieved entirely from the energy that makes up the "Force".

From the way I understood the concept, Anakins' mother contributed nothing to his creation. If I understand the information in the bible correctly, (and I may be wrong here), God caused Mary to "conceive". This would indicate that her egg was used.

Having said that, I can see where a great deal of confusion could set in, provided that anyone considered Star Wars as real. I haven't yet seen or heard of anything like that happening. Everything I have heard indicates that it is accepted as fiction and not as reality. Then again, any television show, movie, book, or magazine that will be viewed by children should be looked at closely, any one remember all the problems following the Teenage Mutant Turtle movies? The best thing we can do, if our children want to see/read things like this is to sit down and explain the difference between reality and fiction and to reinforce what we, thier parents, believe as opposed to the "lessons" they might learn through such media.

provided that anyone considered Star Wars as real.

To quote John Wayne Bobbit, I'm stumped!! I was a tender lad when Star Wars (Episode 4) came out, and I never considered the possibility that Darth Vader was a real guy. Now, my son, being at about the same tender age, doesn't think that Annakin Skywalker is real. Come to think of it, he doesn't know what a virgin birth is, either.
