I personally do not believe in drinking alcoholic beverages. I believe it can hurt a Christians testimony because it can cause others to "stumble and fall". I just wondered what others think about Christians drinking. Do you think it hurts a Christian's testimony or not?

All things in moderation :D :D

Well, I fully believe in Christian liberty. Certainly, we have a certain amount of lee-way. However, Paul also said that even though all things were lawful for him they all aren't beneficial. I consider drinking alcohol one of those potential things.

1. The person that sees you buying it doesn't necessarily see it associated with a Christian.

2. The people seeing you drink it, depending on the situation, may also not see that.

3. My dad taught me growing up that it's better to err on the side of conservativism, then to get so close to the line that you stand a chance of falling over.

4. Jesus prayed, "lead us not into temptation.." I think that the closer we put ourselves to the possibility of excess, the further we are from meaning such words in our own prayers.

Anyway

In Christ,
Michael

I enjoy the occasional brew. Very occasional, like maybe once every 3 months I will have a beer.

But, I am very careful who I have a beer with. I am also very careful to not have too many.

I come from a long line of alchoholics, & have experienced a lot of problems in my life due to excessive drinking. It is so rare for me to drink nowadays, that I consider myself a non-drinker.

I am closing this topic here, and moving it to "General Baptist Discussions", where I feel it will be more appropriate.

Bottoms Up! Well, not for me personally, but for anyone of legal age who chooses to drink in moderation in the privacy of thier own home.

Also, I think its arrogant at best to say buying alcohol is unChristian. Jesus must have looked very unChristian turning water into wine.

I happen to believe in context of the whole bible and the teaching of living a holy set apart life,we should be different than the world on this one. My husband and I have comitted to never drink alcohol, simply because it is a bad thing in our culture and sends so many mixed messages to unbelievers. I have thourougly expressed my views on that other page about this same topic(libery for chritians)....no need to go into all that again. but,I think chritians should get serious about being salt and light and not living worldly. I happen to disagree with the majority on this one. ;) But,that's okay! I'm right where I need to be.

See, I have a bit of a problem with this...Why would the Bible say "wine is a mocker" and then Jesus drank up? Seems as tho there is a contradiction. But I don't think so. There is no way for me to prove this, but I BELIEVE that the "wine" they drank was simply wine without fermentation. I can't see how the Bible (which became flesh in the form of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ) would tell us that wine is a mocker and to beware of strong drink all the while sipping from the wine glass...

I used to think moderate drinking was ok, and if you feel that way, that is your decision. Me personally, I too have seen how destructive drinking can be to a person and the people who love them. I Peter tells us to be of sound mind...you cannot be of sound mind when you drink, even if you drink just a little...the affect it has strips away the layers of self-control and morality sip by sip.

If you cannot do something comfortably in public and not worry about your testimony, then why do it at all? When you are alone in the comfort of your home, God is still with you. Shouldn't you care more about your testimony in the presence of our Holy God?

Just my opinion...If I offended anyone, I sincerely apologize.

I've heard that wine in those days was just grape juice most of my life. But make some grape juice, then leave it out for a while, even all day and night. I don't think it will last for very long, it will sour. Grape juice needs refrigeration, wine does not. To my knowledge, they didn't have Maytag or the Maytag man in those days.
Personally, I don't drink but not because I believe to be wrong or a sin, just because I think it tastes nasty. [IMG] Water, ice tea or cola is fine for me.

LoL Sue! I never did like wine either, it IS nasty!! I never liked beer either...YUCK!

I hear ya about refridgeration but the same could be said of their food right? They must have either ate it all when it was prepared (or drank it all) or had to throw the rest out (or feed it to the dogs...did they have dogs back then? LoL)

Actually, wine skins were lowered into the deep wells where it was kept cool and did not ferment as the modern wines do in a short time.

I, too, have never used or would consider using alcohol in anything except a few recipes where it is burned off. The OT tells me not to even look at it; cannot imagine ever drinking.

But cut a lot of slack for those on the BB who opt to fulfill Proverbs 23:31ff

Dr. Bob,
How do you resolve this verse.......
Deu 14:26 And thou shalt bestow that money for whatsoever thy soul lusteth after, for oxen, or for sheep, or for wine, or for strong drink, or for whatsoever thy soul desireth: and thou shalt eat there before the LORD thy God, and thou shalt rejoice, thou, and thine household,

My whole premise has been that choice is one thing, scriptural based abstinence is contra-biblical?

What sayeth thee?

Scott

< I've heard that wine in those days was just grape juice most of my life. >>

Let's try substituting "grape juice" into the verses cited in this thread, among othres, and check if it really makes sense...

"Grape juice is a mocker..."
"Do not gaze at grape juice when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly! In the end it bites like a snake and poisons like a viper."
"Give strong drink to him who is perishing, And grape juice to him whose life is bitter" (Proverbs 31:6).
"For John the Baptist has come eating no bread and drinking no grape juice, and you say, 'He has a demon!' The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Behold, a gluttonous man and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'" (Luke 7:32-33)

Paul did instruct Timothy to use a little wine for the Stomach. My grandad did just this and the man would have one small glass very infrequently and it did help his stomach. He never ever got drunk.

I cannot condemn people who drink a little but I cannot join them. I am a tee-totaler. I have a conviction about it because there were too many alcoholics in my family on both sides. I have seen the many lives in my family destroyed by drinking so there are more wrongs to it then rights as far as I am concerned.

Let's use a little common sense and some biblical context here people: Never at any time did Jesus sin....He never encouraged sinners to sin, and He most certainly would not partake in something He forbade.

If Jesus at Cana fed the miriad guests at that wedding strong wine...He would have been contributing to the sinful affects of the wine....

....Jesus cleaned up the party...for once(after ending with the NONALCOHOLIC beverage), the people probably went home from the party sober. Don't tell me that Jesus got them all drunk....ridiculous....
