Deut 5:8 "You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth."

Wow, we've got a lot of stuff to throw out then don't we?

If the Second Commandment was a blanket prohibition against the making of any kind of image at all for any purpose, how could God have been consistent with Himself and still command Moses to make images of cherubim in the construction of the Tabernacle in the Wilderness, and the Brass Serpent? (Exodus 25:18; 26:1, 31; Numbers 21:8, 9).

Clearly the prohibition is centered on the worship of images, which the people were wont to do. Indeed, we ourselves tend to think true and spiritual worship is actually in the things we use for worship, so perhaps pics aren't a good thing in corporate worship.

    Anyway, those are my thoughts.

Oh, BTW, no painting or drawing of Christ does Him justice: "...he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him," Isaiah 53:2. He was not a good-looking man, therefore any true representations would not sell well, but there are no physical descriptions of Christ--except what I quoted above.

Also, how could a sinful man capture the facial expressions of a sinless one? Are there any here that actually think when Christ was angry He looked anything like us when we get angry? What of His weeping? And puh-leeze? Laughing? Not saying He never laughed, but please! There is not one record in the Gospels of Christ laughing. God obviously did not want us to think of His Son in that manner.

I'm rambling. But those are just some thoughts.

John paints a "word picture" that should be what we are looking for in our soon-coming Lord: <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:</font><HR> . . . and among the lampstands was someone "like a son of man," dressed in a robe reaching down to his feet and with a golden sash around his chest. His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow, and his eyes were like blazing fire. His feet were like bronze glowing in a furnace, and his voice was like the sound of rushing waters. In his right hand he held seven stars, and out of his mouth came a sharp double-edged sword. His face was like the sun shining in all its brilliance.

When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: "Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and behold I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades."<HR></BLOCKQUOTE>Quite a different pix than the long-haired effeminate Jesus pictured in our homes and churches.

Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ. [/b]For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. Colossians 2:8-9

Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or silver, or stone, graven by art and man's device. And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent: Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. Acts 17:29-31

From drawings of other Jewish figures of the time, Jesus woulg have had slightly longer hair than the Romans with the long, curly sideburns (Jews did not cut these as idol worshipers did) and likely short and stocky.

Also, Isaiah said He was nothing pleasant to look upon. (Isaiah 53:2)

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't the graven image scriptures specifically refer to worshiping the image as wrong? As long as you aren't worshipping a pictural artistic representation, who cares? I have seen all kinds of pictures representing what different cultures at different times thought he looks like... I think the bible remains silent on his appearance on purpose, it doesn't matter what he looked like on the outside, only who he is on the inside.

There would be nothing wrong with it. In fact, people do all of the time, only in English it's Joshua. Jesus was the Greek form of the Hebrew name Yeshua.
