1 Corinthians 13:8 Love never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.
13 And now abideth faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Signs and wonders (for the most part) ceased within the first century of the early church.

HankD, where does that passage say anything about the first century? The passage is in future tense: these things will happen when the perfect has come, when we see face to face.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by "for the most part"? ;)

Is it possible to be a Baptist with Pentacostal leanings??

I remember a time when I was about 15, a good friend took me to her church, which was Pentacostal. They had just bought a bigger church to house their growing congregation, which had been vacant for a few years. Apparently, it used to be a Southern Baptist church.

Well, my friend and I are sitting there, in this newly refurbished building, and the pastor stands up. The first thing he says, and I remember it word for word:

"Before we begin today, we have some business to take care of! This church building was once owned by the Baptists, and we must cleanse the demons from it!!"

I sorta snuck out before they got around to the real 'demon'-purification process... ever since I always figured Baptists and Pentacostals didn't exactly like each other. :(

When a Baptist Church begins to believe the devil's lies & departs from Baptist doctrine, they cease to be Baptist... "Pentecostalism" centers on man and his spiritual experiences. May God give us the grace and knowledge of His Word to stand against this heresy!

The future tense was used because those who were sent had not yet gone on to be the Lord at the time of the giving the command and/or writing of its account.
These "signs" were to follow them including the raising of the dead.

"For the most part..." supposed "miracles" occured in the early post-apostolic church though they were not as common as when the apostles were here.

    HankD,

Do you believe "that which is perfect" has come? Do we now "see face to face"? Has knowledge passed away?

Do you believe true miracles happen today?

    Dear Brian,

    You inquired about...

That which is "perfect" is come…

The word "perfect" in this passage has the nuance of complete and/or mature as in the 1 John passage that speaks of being perfected in love when we walk by faith (The just shall live by faith).

I attribute this to the completion of the Revelation of God on earth (Yes this is the "standard" Baptist answer but one which I have conviction concerning).
I do believe that this has an additional future fulfillment in the final eternal estate when faith shall become sight. Today we are to reckon our faith as "sight".

"Face to face". Yes, since the day I was saved in my barracks I have seen Him "Face-to Face"
by faith through the completed revelation of Jesus Christ in the Scriptures and the indwelling Holy Spirit.
Again, I believe that this has an additional future fulfillment in the final eternal estate when faith shall become sight.

Has knowledge passed away? Yes in terms of God's Revelation to humanity on earth the Book of Hebrews makes that plain:

Hebrews 1:1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the
prophets, 2. Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things,
    by whom also he made the worlds;

"hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son". We have all we the knowledge we need to be saved in the Scripture.

In 1 John we are told of the day when we shall "see" him as He is. Then faith will become sight.
For now we "see" Him by faith.

"Do you believe true miracles happen today?"

Not in the sense of a "sign" or a "wonder" but as an answer to the prayer of faith.
But to be honest I wouldn't call an answer to prayer (even to the moving of a mountain) a miracle.
With God however all things are possible and if wants to perform a miracle who am I to say He shouldn't.
The important thing is that we have a thankful heart and glorify our Father in heaven when He answers our prayer or gives a miracle.

If a brother a sister calls an answer to prayer a miracle (and yes, Baptists occasionally use the "M" word), I understand and rejoice with them.

    Hey HankD,

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I hold different interpretations of those passages, and I also believe genuine miracles still happen today.

    God bless,
    Brian

As I said on another post there are people who call themselves Baptistcostals. There are a lot of them in Louisiana (whether GrannyGumbo has met them or not).

"Love will last forever, but prophecy and speaking in unknown languages and special knowledge will all disappear. Now we know only a little, and even the gift of prophecy reveals little! But when the END COMES, these special gifts will all disappear." I Corinthians 13:8. NLT. (not the Bible but the end of time)

Chapter 14: "Let love be your highest goal, but also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives, especially the gift of prophecy. For if your gift is the ability to speak in Tongues, you will be TALKING TO GOD, but not to people, since they won't be able to understand you. YOu will be speaking by the POWER OF THE SPIRIT, BUT IT WILL ALL BE MYSTERIOUS. But one who prophesies is helping others grow in the Lord, encourging and comforting them. A person who speaks in tongues is STRENGHTENED PERSONALLY IN THE LORD, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strenghtens the entire church. I wish you all had the gift of speaking in tongues.

Then he went on to say in verse 14, "For if I pray in tongues, my spirit is praying, but I don't understand what I am saying. Well then what should I do? I will do both, I will pray in the spirit and I will pray in words I understand. I will sing in the spirit and I will sing in words that I understand." He also said later that he spoke in tongues more than anyone else.

This is exactly the verses Baptistcostals use for speaking in Tongues. They don't teach it is necessary for salvation but it is a gift given by God. A gift that is ignored and put down by main stream baptists who hold on to teachings by the same man who most Church of Christ people follow, MR Campbell. They believe in the TRinity. In baptism but not regenerational baptism. They believe salvation is by faith through the death of Jesus and the blood of Jesus but they do not believe in Once Saved always Saved. They are not bound by works salvation either.

The 1828 dictionary? Pentecostal wasn't even a word then – in the sense we know it.

Bapticostal is NOT, but Pentecostal IS in the Webster's 1828 Dictionary, but not in the "sense" it's known today. Do ya think this tells us something? ;)

The reason you cannot find this term is that it is man made. It is the name give to Baptists who believes in speaking in Tongues by other Baptists.

What I read is that it is a concocted term given to themselves, by themselves, because they have fallen for satan's lies & chosen to depart from the truth.

My mother attends a Pentecostal church, and has called herself "Bapticostal" in the past, although I doubt she knew there was an official group of Bapticostals. (BTW, she has not fallen for satan's lies & chosen to depart from the truth [IMG] )

She has often said "Lord, give me the head of a Baptist, the heart of a Pentecostal, and the feet of a Jehovah's Witness." I really like that. [IMG]

And don't get me started on what wasn't in Webster's 1828 dictionary. ;)

In ten years you won't be able to tell the difference between an SBC church and TBN. (And that won't be because TBN will straighten up.)
