There are many things that can be done in the attempt to stop abortion. Sometimes I think Christians make the mistake of saying that "my way is the only way".

What do you think we should be doing to stop abortion which presently claims about 3500-4000 lives per day in America?

I don't think it is up to us to stop. We pray that God stops it somehow. we can shout against it, try to make people think about it, tell them consequences for it, and pray for wisdom & guidance on what ways to vote, & wisdom for our leaders.

But we won't stop it ourselves.

Glad you reopened the topic. Will check and see who closed the previous.

America is a land of laws. We are a Constitutional Republic and the "will of the majority" should not affect anyone. Sadly, in 1972 the 5-4 decision that said that states were wrong in having differing legal codes on abortion (THAT was the ruling of Roe v Wade) put the ball in the Federal perveyance.

Okay, so what we must do is then make a Federal Law that will pass both houses, get signed and have a conservative enough Supreme Court so that it won't get tossed.

THAT is our option and duty. NOT bombing abortion clinics or sending white powder in envelopes. Let GOD "judge" them; let US get busy and influence the laws of the land.

Just changing the law will not stop abortions, at one time it was illegal and they were still performed. Education of the young, and parental responsibility only go so far in a secular society without God. I truly have no idea of how to stop other than praying for God to intercede in someway.

    Dr. Bob:

I closed the Abortion and Media thread because it was going downhill fast with talk of violence against abortionists and society. This thread has a more edifying subject matter.

I think the way the issue MUST be looked at is as the defense of innocent life. This is especially urgent because those who are being slaughtered cannot defend themselves.

If there was an infant outside the womb, and a man was dismembering it, how would you respond? Would you interfere and physically restrain the man? or just "raise your voice" and preach at him hoping "God will stop it." And, why does the proximity of the infant to the womb make any difference in the type of response?

If we have no personal responsibility to save innocent life, there would be no provision in the Scriptures for civil or church governments.

It's true that the cure for societal ills is the preaching of the Gospel. The missionaries are the ones who civilized the world, but not without establishing that branch of ministry which bears the sword. Government is there to stem the tide of wickedness and protect the weak, with the sword for it is certain that not all people will respond to the Gospel and will only restrain their wicked impulses to save their own necks.

Now, if government is not filling that role, upon whom does the responsibility fall?

All matters governing the affairs of mankind always falls into the hands of God. He instituted governments in the first place! He can raise and throw down kings, rulers, and governments. God raises these human institutions to the blessings or the scourge of the nations. And by all indications we are in the last days, for we see the morality of the world sinking fast. Can you on your own save even one of your hair from falling? The victories of Christians were not won on the battlefields but always on the knees!

Isn’t it marvelous how God interferes in our everyday lives? In the deepest despair of our human existence God is there, and He reaches down to lift us out of the miry clay onto the solid rock. Dr. Pat Creed, a missionary speaker in our church, in his recent sermon summarized this in 5 points. His Scripture passage was from 1 Kings 17:1-24.

    1) Instruction (v.v. 2, 3). When God gets our attention, He is giving us a set of instructions in our daily walk.
    2) Promise (v.v. 4, 9). After the instructions God reassures us that He will meet our need in a miraculous way.
    3) Obedience (v.v. 5, 10). After the promise God wants us to obey Him. Only obedience activates God for a response.
    4) Supply (v.v. 6, 15). God supplies our need and sustains us with strength if we obey Him.
    5) Testing (v. 7). But in order that we remain dependent on Him, God tests us and reminds us (lest we forget) that our sustenance and our very existence are flowing from Him.

This cycle is repeating itself in our lives. We need to review our lives daily and see where we stand in God’s 5-point cycle and do those things, which God requires of us. Remember, revival does not start with the world – it begins with me! [IMG]

    How do we stop abortion?

The funny thing about most people is that they worry about what other people think and then change what they think.

We need to create a stigma on abortion. The Bible says something to the effect of: reprove him before men that he may be ashamed (I'll look it up).

We need to have ads on TV that shame people for having an abortion. Nobody minds it when they make TV commercials that reticule drug use, because everybody knows that it is effective.

In short, we need to condemn evil.

As much as I would love to see abortion end completely, I'm afraid that even if it's illegal it's not going to end. There are those who have no problems going and having it done anyway..people do what the want to do. Prayer is best.

As far as legal options go, the Constitution doesn't allow Congress to legalise or outlaw abortion (not that Congress has ever let that pesky 'ol Constitution stand in it;s way before).

The most they can do is send it back to the states.

Since individual states tend to be much more conservative in the abortion legislation that they pass, we would be much better campaigning for laws to make it a state issue.

However, there are much more important questions we need to ask. What are we, as the church, doing to reach out to those whose situations are so desperate that they've come to believe that their only "choice" is to kill their baby? Are we really doing all we can? Personally, I tend to think not. Far from it.

The other thing we need to ask ourselves is: How much credibility can we really expect to have until we are doing everything we can?

I truly believe that the church could stop, or at least put a serious dent in, many of our social problems if we would just get off our pews and get to work.

Please don't think I'm coming down on anyone, this is a problem that we all share in.

During my lifetime I have seen the systematic purging of God from our culture. As a child I remember a very different, and much better, America. I remember a happier time when we all prayed together at the beginning of morning class in school, beneath the gaze of the Ten Commandment's, posted from a nearby wall. I also remember our nation being "one nation, under God." So, when I see the delapidated state of our America around me today---the abortions, the riots, the drugs, the rape, the murder, and so on---I reflect on the simpler, better times of yesteryear with sadness and more than a little longing. My answer to the question you pose is this: rehang God's law from our courthouse and schoolhouse walls, bring back prayer in school, and mostly bring God back into our lives as a united people dedicated to serving him as a nation. Only then can we hope to sway the tides of time back toward the former, better days.

    Peace,
    Evangelist Michael Estes

I hope you will allow me to post a web site. It is the John Birch Society's web site. They have a lot of good info and links to every senator and congressman. www.jbs.org is the web site.

In case any of you don't know this, John Birch was a Baptist missionary to China, before and during WWII. He was killed by Chinese communists after the war.

State Law will do not good. That is what Roe v Wade struck down. Each state had different standards.

Has to be Federal and THAT is going to be tough. Senators and Representatives are not likely to risk offending the large and vocal pro-death groups (many of which LIVE on the $$ from killing babies).

Folks in my district are about 50/50. If I were a legislator, I'd be hesitant to offend 50% of my constituents who will ALL vote against me for reelection.

And I'm in Republican bastion of Wyoming. What about those in Hillary's domain? Or California? Or Chicago?

Wow, lots of good ideas. Thanks. I think that Christians should be heavily involved in as many of the above as they have time for. It saddens me that most are not involved in any, at least in my experience. I disagree with only two points made above: 1) that laws will not help (should we have anarchy and eliminate laws against theft etc. because it "happens anyway"?) and 2) that the "main thing" is prayer (because "faith without works is dead").

    How about this suggestion?

Offer ministry, help, support, counseling, etc. to young girls who are pregnant and unwed and feel that abortion is the only way out since they have no money and no idea how to raise a child on their own.

Christians spend billions of dollars every year on books, videos and tapes by the latest popular authors and billions more on church buildings that never fill up. Couldn't we find a few dollars to train some people to help some of these girls out when they get into trouble, and give them some choices, like deciding to keep the baby because they can find a decent job and place to like, or give it up for adoption because they could care for themselves during the pregnancy?

And the bottom line is that by ministering in this way, Christ is visible through what we do and say and redemption, ultimately, is the best prevention.

Introduce people to Jesus. Permanent regeneration happens only through him. Watch our walk because others are watching us even closer.

Not just introduce laws. Introduce representatives, senators, governors, and presidents that will support the hearing and passing of those laws.

You want to get the impact of what someone's about to do across to them? When you stand in front of an abortion clinic, don't display a picture of a fetus. Display THE picture of a fetus--the one where the fetus is reaching out and holding the doctor's finger.

You want to ensure people know what's going on? Educate them. Pennsylvania Jim keeps bringing up the fact that there are 3500 babies being aborted each day; it's more like 3800-3900. Approximately 1,400,000 each year. They need to know that. They need to know that a fetus is NOT a "blob of tissue" or "similar to a vestigial organ."

No, we can NEVER "stop" abortion, just as we can never stop sin. But we can curb it greatly.

    Warm Christian greetings!

Protesting to local politicians and trying to change the law may work to an extent, but our first calling is to evangelise the lost. A change in the law will not change their hearts, ultimately that is what is needed.

    Kind regards

I enjoyed reading many of the respones. I believe that education is important. I do not think that most people really understand that it is not just a peice of tissue but a living little child that is being killed. I have talked to people who were shocked to here what went on in an abortion. In todays world it is next to impossable to expose the truth; since most media is opperated by those who strongly support baby killing.
It may well be that it will continue until God returns. I often wonder if our nation will survive if we do not turn back from such a horrid practice.
