Let's all do a little math here. If the above news story is accurate, then that means, of the 1.3 million who used to live there only about 560000 people even want to move back. I wonder why the number is so small. Perhaps, we might find at least part of the answer in this quote here:

Or maybe this has something to do with it:

I wonder how many of those who don't want to go back are part of those who lived in the squaller of poverty for so many years in New Orleans and now see an opportunity to start a new and better life somewhere else where there is more opportunity for them, and how many who want to go back are those who did very well for themselves. It begs the question: Will we be wasting billions of taxpayer dollars in New Orleans rebuilding a city for the rich who now don't have to live with the general population of the poor, while the rest of them struggle to make a better life elsewhere without as much help from the government?

I wouldn't want to return mainly because of the chemical contamination. We might not see any problems from it at first but the next generation will.

Perhaps New Orleans could be rebuilt differently than it was before. Since there will be less people there, why not only rebuild the land that is not as prone to flooding?

That would be about 20% of the city as 80% of it is below sea level. But, again, I still pose the question about the poor who don't want to come back. I think we should be putting our money into helping them relocate and if they want to rebuild this city just so it can be destroyed again, let them do it themselves.

I was there, in the hurricane. I lived in new orleans all my life, and i have worked in neworleans since i was 18.
Let me get something straight... those people who lived in poverty were in that situation because they did not want to work. Those who are older are excused because they did not have the opportunity as others did and they are both excused and to be provided for. However, those 50 years old and younger are poor because mostly bec they do not work. They do not want to work. No amount of money spent on education and no classes offered for trades will ever give these folks the desire to work so long as they can eat and sleep for free.. have babies out of wedlock and earn more than i do sitting on their butts.
I will write a longer email when things settle a bit. Just trust me, for those who were the criminal element and the welfare cheaters, if they do not plan to come back, GLORY HALLELUJAH. We dont need those folks. To quote the mayor, "New Orleans is now drug free and violence free and we intend to keep it that way". Amen.
Problem now is those cities who have opened their hearts and wallets to our people have little clue of what they have brought in. Looting in Baton Rouge, Hattiesburg, all over,... four people robbed and killed in hattiesburg by looters. I pray somehow that the crime and be stopped in those cities who were so gracious. I just fear that this storm has unleashed a criminal element from Hollygrove, Ninth Ward, and Kenner areas.

So, are you telling me that 57% of the city are a bunch of moochers, criminals, lazy good for nothings? Something is telling me there is more to the story than that.

HMMMM...second highest poverty rate in America and you think they are all that way because they don't want to work? Just curious how many of these impoverished people do you know? How did you come to this revelation about every Impoverished citizen of New Orleans who is now seeking a much better life outside of the rotten cesspool that is New Orleans?

Judging from your attitude, however, I now know the answer to my earlier question is a definite yes:

</font>[/QUOTE]Let me tell ya, JBot---those surveys people read??? Its a bunch of Hoop-la-la!!! Ain't you caught on to that by now!!??

The same media that gave us "a rough estimate of 10,000 dead"---is the same idiotic media that is saying that over half who left New Olreans ain't coming back!!!

If what happened in New Olreans---happened in your "neck" of Arkansas---you'd be back---because thats where you live! Thats where you belong!

I talked with a buddy of mine who "rode out" Hurricane Hugo in Charleston----in little or no time---Charleston was back to "normal"----same way with Hurricane Andrew when it hit south Florida and then Louisiana----I remember when Andrew hit Louisiana back in '93----the news media started reporting massive fish kills in the Atchafalaya River swamp----they had everybody "boo hooin'" and squallin' about the fish industry being lost forever-----until the Louiaiana Fish and Wildlife folks came in and set out a couple of boat loads of Florida Strain Black Bass----then in a couple of years---the news media reported back---"Fishin' is better than ever thanks to Andrew!!"----I trust the media about like I trust . . . well . . . I just don't rely on what they say!!!

And this last of all---something you'll never hear the cleaver media report----I've had several people that I know who have fled New Orleans in front of the storm----they have since been in contact with their employers down in New Orleans----and all have said this

"My company is paying me for the next 9 months salary!!"---IOW---the company is sending a message---"We're coming back and we want you with us when we do!!"

Others who work offshore down below New Orleans in Venice

"Our rigs are down but the company is paying us straight salary until the rig goes back on line!!"

57% "MAY NOT" come back---thats a bunch of "crock" son!!! They'll be back!!! Wait and see!!! And if they don't go back----somebody else will be down there to take their place!!!

    Bro. Dave,

With all due respect, if this happened in my neck of the woods, and my local government forgot about me and was that corrupt and incomptent, and I was living in poverty beforehand, and had the opportunity to relocate somewhere else...it would be done in a heartbeat. I would not look back.

You'd go wherever your mind drove you to go and guess what??? You may not look back---you won't have to!!! Your poverty will not follow you wherever you go---it'll go with you---you'll take your poverty with you to your new location---going from New Orleans to Houston or Dallas or Orlando or Atlanta or Chicago---won't change your poverty---you think there ain't no folks living in Little Rock livin' in poverty?????? You'd leave New Orleans in poverty---and when you get to your destination---guess what---your poverty will be the first one to greet you wherever it is you plan on going to escape your poverty!!!

    Bro. Dave,

When you live in a city that is second only to Detroit in poverty for large cities in America, you got to think that it is not only your fault that you live in poverty. Perhaps, there is something wrong with the city and the policies there. You can find better opportunities elsewhere. I know that when many folks came across the ocean to immigrate here from other countries way back when, many were looking for a better life, a better government. I don't think it is such a stretch to think that maybe many of these folks are seeking the same thing. I say, more power to them and may they find the opportunities they seek that New Orleans failed miserably to offer. As a matter of fact, many of them are finding those opportunities in much better places than New Orleans ever dreamed of being. Furthermore, poverty is certainly not the only reason to leave (although it is a good reason), but also the fact that the rotten cesspool is 10 feet below sea level. But, we Americans will spend billions of dollars rebuilding this place just to have it destroyed again.

All they will really get is an OPPORTUNITY. Some people evidently had none in NOLA. They'll get out of that opportunity what they put into it.

I agree. If New Orleans had offered more opportunities to its people and cared about them a bit more, then they would not be the second highest poverty rate in America for large cities and 57% would not be talking about relocating. They will find an abundance of opportunity elsewhere in the country.

The relocation is because they are being TREATED better, being given food, etc. Its NOT about opportunity, its the fact they DONT WANT TO WORK. I know MANY. I wouldnt hesitate to tell you that 57% of the citys folks are moochers. DEFINITELY. 71% of the children born in the city are illegitimate. They have babies and we pay them for it.
TRUTH..... While those of us in Kenner, Metairie, St Bernard and the surrounding areas were in neck deep water with no food or drink for two or three days, we were close enough to the I-10 to see all those trucks bringing food and water to the dome, the convention center, etc. Some folks like Jesse and Al dont realzie that that we, (black, white, hispanic and Asian) in the surrounding area and numbering 30,000 strong at one I 10 exit were bypassed. Food and water was re-routed to New Orleans. Racism? No. Fear of being labeled racist is what caused that.
Other point, Jerferson Parish sent folks out to retrieve diesel fuel. It got out, got the fuel and was bringing it back in. Someone (I am assuming FEMA) stopped the truck, TOOK the truck and delivered the fuel to the convention center area. The sheriff and others got together and sent another truck out with the orders to kill anyone who tries to take the truck, cops, fema, ANYONE. Our generators were sapped of the fuel.

The media has two problems.. ONE... it has not told the entire story of what it had seen, and TWO, the media was NOT ALLOWED the freedomt to roam and therefore did not see what the rest of us saw. I am not sure why they were restricted and i will not question those who decided to limit the media.

More people are dead than they are telling you. Maybe not 10,000, but more than they say. I got friends in police, fire, hospitals, etc... we keep in touch.

One frightening thing was word came to us on the street Tuesday that folks in st bernard were out there in neck deep water, holding on to their kids, sitting on rooftops, and they had no food or water, while the city of New Orleans was the main focus.
One friend in the Breaux Bridge area recieved a call from St bernard from his brother. He got in his truck and was stopped in Laplace, which is the town before Kenner. They asked him what he was doing. he expplained and they said No,., you must talk with FEMA and get an assignment pass. He backed up..launched his boat and rode all the way to chalmette, found his brother, broguth him back home Let me tell you.. some folks are going to be in a deep mess when things get up and running again. ...
sorry.. for rambling.. almost lost my life out there trying to care for my family who refused to leave.
sorry about the attitude, but I know I am right in this situation.
pray for all the churches and wonderful folks who have openend their wallets for the victims of this disaster.
    Peace
    tim

Amazing Dr. Tim, and I agree with you tahat when the whole story gets out a lot of questions will have to be answered, Why were other locations outside of the Superdome practically were ignored. Please remember that the victims inside of the Superdome wwere pratically ignored until the media started focusing on them. There is no excused for what happened in areas other than the Dome,it is criminal!!. However I think it was wrong for the sheriff or anyone else to advise the drivers of the fuel truck to shoot to kill a cop or a fema person if they tryed to take the fuel, what if someone had really done it?. ---Peace and be safe--all of you have had it a 100 times worse than N.Y.C. did on 9/11---------Sheila
