OK, fellow Calvinists. Let's try to amuse ourselves for a little and put a whole bunch of posts where the words "all" and "every" are limited by context. I'll start.

I can't believe everybody thinks that election is something Calvin made up.

HINT - Obviously, "everybody" in the last sentence does not equal everybody who has ever lived. It is limited in the context of our discussions.

"Oh, no, it's raining. Johnny, here are the car keys. Run out to the parking lot and roll up all the windows."

"All of them? But Dad, I'll be there for hours!"

    Good one, Tim! [IMG] [IMG]

But, wait. Are you limiting those who understand God's grace to just all calvinists?

"All" is limited! It's a detergent with stainlifter and a fabric softener.

Can youse guys do that without sounding so, well – well, so unknowingly uncouth? That is just natural sloppiness. “Y’all” is so much more sophisticated than “Youse”.

I would like to get seriously serious CalvB, as I believe you may be serious about this. But how serious can one joining the discussion do so within such a confined area? Can you give us a starting and stopping point, so we don't overstep the bounds for this discussion? If we are limited we’ll not understand Calvin for Calvin to become Calvinistic had to search scripture to find what he did, otherwise there would be no such thing as a Calvinist. It will be interesting as discussion begins, for to understand the position of Calvin we are going to need the “whole” bible.

I was born and raised in NJ, and I now live in Texas. So here's a message for all y'all. Both "youse" and "y'all" come naturally to me.

Just for curiosity's sake, let's start with 1 Tim. 2:4.

Let's not start with a hotly debated passage. Why don't we start with passages that use the universal statements such as "all" or "whole world" or "every" in a sense that doesn't mean every single person who has ever lived. But not one that is always brought up in the argument. We'll get to that one soon enough, I'm sure.

Remember that the point of my original post is that there are many times in the Bible, as well as in everyday usage, when we use universal language to mean things other than every single person who has ever lived.

The reason behind this post is that non-Calvinists often point to the universal statements in the Bible in reference to salvation and say it HAS to mean every single person that has ever lived. When we point out that it doesn't have to mean that, we are told we are redefining words. But there are multiple uses of universal words. My question is, "how many of those can we find?"

    Here's one:

Matthew 26:13 Assuredly, I say to you, wherever this gospel is preached in the whole world, what this woman has done will also be told as a memorial to her."

The phrase "whole world" is used here. Did Jesus mean that when the gospel is preached to every single individual that has every lived, this woman will be talked about? Obviously not. Did He even mean that every person who hears the gospel (leaving out those who never hear) will, during the presentation of the gospel, hear about what this woman has done? Did you hear this story when you heard the gospel? I pretty sure I didn't.

This is a limited usage of a universal statement. And, gee, it is the phrase "whole world," one that Me4Him loves to use to say that Jesus died for every single person that ever lived.

You-uns is my personal favorite. My wife is from Arkansas, and her mother uses that a lot. Can't say that I've ever said youse, though. That's New Jersey, which I would never claim as my territory. I have been know to say "you all" some, which is still too yankee for most southerners!

They can say anything they doggone well please.

Had some flooding (11 inches in under 24 hours) in our area of White Rock Lake last week, and had about three feet of water flooding our garage; now just finishing up washing and cleaning out, trashing quite a bit of stuff. About finished. Behind in posting, and see if can’t jump in here this evening or tomorrow to see what this all about.

I take it we have the go ahead to use the whole Word of God in this discussion.

But you know the story now...and it's in the Bible, which means that every person who ever reads the Bible will know that story. And that happens all over the world.

    All means all.

</font>[/QUOTE]But even your example limits "all" to all those who read the Bible. All humans who ever lived or will ever live don't fall into that category. My point, once again, stands.
